Possible Fuel Leak
I was working at a neighbours car today putting new shocks in the back of it, and had my car parked on his drive, which was tarmacked, when i reversed my car up to let his out of the garage to test it up the road i noticed mine had marked its territory, the wet yard and whatever leaked made a rainbow esque oil stain on the driveway.
Anyhow i parked the 406 in the shed down at the farm with the clean concrete floor, left it and went and worked on the 106 for a couple of hours, came back to the 406 and there was a small leak from under the engine bay, around the middle on the right, i smelt it and it seems to be diesel, it doesnt leave any particular coloured stain so its not oil.
Standing near the engyine ba there is a very diesely smell coming off it at the moment
Given i had the strange misfire issue last week, a fuel leak would explain it, where is the most common places for fuel to leak, do them UV dyes work at showing where it could be leaking.

Re: Possible Fuel Leak
indeed, i couldnt see anything obvious under the bonnet.
Re: Possible Fuel Leak
I have had diesel leaks in 3 places on the 406s, the leak off pipe seals on the injectors, on the plastic pipes where they come round from the aux belt side under the engine cover (the cover rubs through the pipes and a leak forms), also from the fuel filter housing top seal....most common one!

Re: Possible Fuel Leak
Took a better look at the engine today looing at it last night under the led light didnt show it too well but the filter housing is very wet looking and the diesel smell is strongest there
Re: Possible Fuel Leak
After changing the C5's fuel filter, I ended up with diesel pissing everywhere. Not just dripping, but trickling onto the floor.
Took several attempts at closing it properly, starting with hand-tight, then as tight as I could get it with hands before I ended up taking a screwdriver and hammer to it. It was then I noticed the scuffs that said someone else has done this in the past. Dunno if it's common practice (didn't need it on the hdi90), but with the persuasion tools I managed to get it to turn a good inch or so more, which has finally stopped the leaking.
At least it's easy to test - just turn the ignition on and off a few times with dry paper towel stuffed around the filter lid
Be aware the diesel can cause issues with anything electrical down below. Got some scary oil pressure warnings and the stop light come up as a result of the sensor plug being soaked.

<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

+1 - plays havoc with the oil level indicator and eventually killed my alternator.mjb wrote:Be aware the diesel can cause issues with anything electrical down below. Got some scary oil pressure warnings and the stop light come up as a result of the sensor plug being soaked.

Re: Possible Fuel Leak
Tried the UV dye, chucked the wee bottle in the diesel before leaving belfast, drove home and shone the light, the filter housing is the culprit, both at the top and at the point where it drains out.

Re: Possible Fuel Leak
That die stuff sounds rather nifty, nicely diagnosed. So, why is the filter housing leaking?

Re: Possible Fuel Leak
I think they can get distorted with age. Mine looked OK, but the top just wouldn't stay sealed no matter how carefully it was assembled and several new O rings. In the end I swapped the whole filter unit for a good s/hand one.

Re: Possible Fuel Leak
Here is the UV dye showing up the leak:

It seems to be coming out of the top and the bottom, a filter housing should probably sort it out, but how do you know if a second hand one is any good, what is the best way to remove the cap on this type of filter housing?

Re: Possible Fuel Leak
I used a second hand one, (from a late but high mileage car gingermagic was stripping for spares).
The housing has to hold the pressure from your lift pump - up to 5 Bar / 75 PSI. (You can see it physically swell when you turn the ignition on).
On my old one, the top was usually damp, but I could never tell if it was the cap or one of the connectors leaking. I could always just unscrew the cap by hand, I did try overtightening it with a big set of pipe grips just before swapping it - this didn't stop the leak either.

Re: Possible Fuel Leak
I havent actually done anything about the leak yet, it hasn't been bothering me, fuel economy doesn't seem to have been affected, the only issue i noticed was a low charge light the other day. Ive got pissed off with used parts on the 106. This looks the same as the fuel filter housing on my car:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PEUGEOT-206-3 ... 2a3487d298
The only thing is the listing calls it a siemens housing, but i always thought this was the bosch housing.
Whats the official peugeot technique to opening and closing this lid, in the past I've just used a screwdriver and hammer to loosen off the lid.

Re: Possible Fuel Leak
The correct way to remove the lid is to use the special tool for the job...which is similar to this.....
http://www.partinfo.co.uk/files/ADK85502.pdf
I usually remove the whole unit and secure it the best way possible then unscrew the lid with an oil filter remover or a large pair of water pump pliers....which is a bit dodgy as you can slip off and snap a pipe on the lid if you are not careful/unlucky.....tightening the same way.
