EGR Cleaner smoke Popped and troubles

Hi, new here but i have lots of possible questions coming along as i try and help my dad out as much as i can.

He has a 2.0 Hdi 90 2002 406.
It was showing low mpg of around 30 - 32mpg so i said id give it a mini service, oil, filters etc and read to use egr spray into the air intake.

The engine prior started on first turn of the key, however now on a cold start, the engine strugles to start without waiting and giving it a little pump on the pedal. When doing the egr spray in short bursts the engine reved up a little each time, when id used almost the whole can, it gave a sort of backfire back out of the air intake and the engine reved up quite high, being alarmed at the unusual happening, i turned off the engine, waited a minute and fired it back up.

Now on starting up the car i get some white smoke on first starting it up which after a minute, clears itself, but still struggles to start from cold but okay at starting when warm.

Ive tried giving it a good thrashing to clear out any leftover egr spray and it does still pull realy well, just a bit concerned, could the egr have damaged the turbo? just can see why if it still pulls great.

Sounds more like you have an air leak in the fuel system.

What you described with the EGR cleaner sounds like totally normal behaviour. The engine will run on the EGR cleaner.
