Cant get driveshaft out

Post by hasler88 »

Hello all

I have been trying to replace the lower engine bush while still on the car, managed to get old one out after the 3 hours of hamering and cutting, the new bush wont go in so I am going to take the mount to garage to get it pressed in, the driveshaft however wont come out, ive undone 3 bolts at the gearbox (dont know if these are supposed to be taken out), undone the 2 11mm nuts 1 all the way and the other half way the bolts are still in as i cant get them out, buts the shaft is wont budge.

Any advice is apreciated cant work tomorrow as I have no car.

Make sure the bolt heads on those two in the mount have been twisted through at least 90°. If you don't do that, they will still 'grab' the bearing in there. The bolts don't need to come out....in fact you can't get them out while the shaft is still in place. You can only back them out enough to twist the heads.(the heads have a turned over lip on them, they don't have a conventional hex head)
Sometimes the bearing is a really snug fit in the casting so 'gentle' persuasion with a pry bar is called for to help it out. **Ditto at the gearbox end to start the joint out of the diff.**

**EDIT: got my sides muddled here....there's nothing to pry against on the gearbox end of the o/s shaft. Only at the bearing.

Which 3 bolts at the gearbox end?? Shouldn't have to touch anything that end. It's the hub end that has to be dismantled to allow the outer cv joint to be withdrawn inwards through the splines in the hub.

Just noticed that in your first pic, the mount has been loosened and is hanging from the block. Secure that back on to keep the inner part of the shaft centred to prevent it grabbing on the way out.

Slightly blurry pic of those bolts with the unusual heads.

Its the 3rd pic with the bolts at the gearbox, where would be a sage place to put the pry bar so not to damage anything

Do that bit back up again on the gearbox end. That shouldn't have been released. Put the pry bar between the inner end of the inner cv joint and the engine mount casting

The way I remove stubborn o/s drive shafts is to clamp a large pair of large mole grips around the shaft then hit them with a hammer in an outward direction, but first as mentioned make sure the heads of the locating bolts in the bearing carrier are turned facing outwards from the shaft.

No you can't pull the shaft from the outside because you have the CV joint in the middle but the mole grip trick usually does it if you whack them hard enough.
