Muggins made a booboo
So I did a bad thing.
I was trying to replace my ball joint on the drivers side as its fubar.
Managed to pull the inner cv joint out of its casing by accident. Bearings fell apart in my hands and dropped their bits all over the floor.
Looks like I need to buy a new driveshaft now, price isn't an issue as new complete driveshaft is about £30 new from J&R who've always done me well before.
My issue is, do I have to replace the whole thing?
Do I have to drain the gearbox oil?
I've done a little research on here and can see that there's bolts holding the intermediate driveshaft joint to the lower engine mount and bearing.
I take it that once undone, this just slides out through the mount?
Essentially, as im miles from a garage, what do I need to make sure I have before I start this job?
I have a a multitude of tools. Enough to do the ball joint I was planning and all sorts of gubbins. But no vice or workshop. And I'll be doing it on axle stands.
Stupid me, for not watching the video about how to do it again before I actually attempted it.

Re: Muggins made a booboo
The shaft is not to difficult to remove although the centre bearing can stick. It should have two bolts that you slacken until the 'nuts' which are actually little offset metal plates are clear of the housing, you rotate them away from the bearing and theoretically it comes out but it usually needs some help.
What I do is clamp a large pair of mole grips tight onto the shaft and knock them outwards with a hammer, that will usually shift the bearing, then the shaft should pull out. You will loose some oil although not all of it but if you quickly stick a piece of clean rag in the hole it will stem the flow.
You will need a large socket to undo the shaft nut and a ball joint separator plus a normal set of spanners/socket set.
You may of course be able to reassemble the inner joint if you have all the bits.

Re: Muggins made a booboo
Unfortunately the inner joint bearings disintegrated into their forming components, including covering my floor in tiny taper roller bearing shafts.....so a rebuild is more hassle than its worth when I can get the whole shaft delivered for 32 quid (already ordered).
All going to plan, the mole grips idea sounds good. I'll try that.
Fingers crossed

Re: Muggins made a booboo
Just to add to Peter's advice...
35mm socket for the front hub nut and you'll probably have to drop the car back on the ground so that the weight is on the wheel before you'll have any chance of getting that nut off. I use an axle stand positioned to support the tool, then all your effort (and you'll need all of it), can be used to loosen the nut.

Good way of doing it - beats splitting the socket.

Re: Muggins made a booboo
Thanks, I'd used this to get as far as I did. I made the mistake of not undoing hub nut and separating cv before splitting ball joint.jasper5 wrote:You might find this useful.....viewtopic.php?f=10&t=20950
Put too much pressure of inner intermediate cv and popped it clean out.
Appreciated though. Its a good guide.

Re: Muggins made a booboo
Go figure. Took me under an hour to change outer cv joint and boot on the near side. No issues as such.
This was a job that also needed doing for mot on friday, so figured I'd do that while I wait for the other shaft to arrive tomorrow.

Re: Muggins made a booboo
Well......driveshaft went in a treat. I used the molegrip trick to remove the old one.
New one slid straight in with no need for encouragement.
So whilst it was all apart and I had good access, I took all the lower intercooler/turbo hose off and cleanes it up (filthy dirty with oily sludge). Also made sure all connections were good etc.
Noticed that my flexi section of the exhaust has separated on top, couldn't see it from underneath but whilst I was feeling about from underneatgh I put my hand over the top of it and there was a gap and it was loose. So thats another thing that needs replaced.
So, back to the original issue that caused the need for me to replace my driveshaft.
Seems like I'm just not very lucky, or im a bit stupid. Either way, its not my week.
Attempted to replace the ball joint again, this time armed with scaffold pipe, a breaker and some ratchet straps.
All seemed set up well, but it would not budge for the life of me.
I put everthing I had into it...which then showed, as I broke my 1/2' breaker bar
![Image](http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/08/01/azaruman.jpg)
So that put an end to the idea. I then tried to do the "Chisel method" as I was desperate at this point. MOT is tomorrow see..... (expires on wednesday).
Well that didnt the do much good either, other than probably making it impossible to now use the ball joint socket that I bought for the job (maybe I can just use that to put it back on lol).
Anyway, its all put back together now in the dark and rain because the neighbours dog was having a field day barking at my every movement and it was nigh on 10pm and I have no doubt I was getting cursed at for banging and making noise.
Gearbox oil all went in ok at the top, I just whapped 1.9l (I just hope it was empty after I drained it).
I'm putting it in the for mot tomorrow anyway as planned. That way I'll know if I've missed anything besides that ball joint that I need to get done asap..
Thanks for all your advice so far.

Re: Muggins made a booboo
Car failed MOT.
As expected really, but also failed on a few other things.
Near side wheel bearing (was hoping the play wasnt too noticable but hey ho)
Ball joint
ABS fault - always beeps when I start the car up but disappears immediately. Sometimes when I nudge the cable block under my drivers carpet (currently above it due to water ingress) it will make the joint "ABS fault" and "Braking fault" warnings appear with 2 lights illuminated on dash. If I kick the block and then turn ignition on and off again they are gone, but the very short fault notice is always there on start up.
Also failed on all indicator bulbs not being orange enough......thats the toughest one of all ;)

This would be because I am using tapatalk on my phone. I edited the signature function there instead of on the actual website.
I only really use it on my phone see.
