Gearboxes for the HDi 90
How many gearbox options were available for the HDi 90 cars?
I still have the gearbox i removed from the 2001 406 last year and according to the VIN and service box its a BVM5 gearbox, is there any difference between this and the BE4 gearbox?

Re: Gearboxes for the HDi 90
I think the BVM5 thing just means it's a manual gearbox with 5 speeds, which all the manual ones are. No relation to BE or ML.

BVM5 = Boite de Vitesse Manuelle (5 speed), i.e. "5 speed manual gearbox" as Steve correctly says

Re: Gearboxes for the HDi 90
AFAIK only one, and in fairness it's a pretty good match to the engine
Current: 407 2.2 HDi 170 & C6 2.7 HDi.
Former: 406 1.9 TD; 406 HDi 90; 407 2.2 160; 307cc 180; 508 HDi 140.

Re: Gearboxes for the HDi 90
I need to change my Gearbox as it's grinding badly and very noisy. The car is off the road now until I source one next week. On my 2000 HDi 90 (made in late 1999) it says embossed on the top of the box, BE4 when I look down from the air filter under the bonnet. Is there different boxes for different years? Is it safe to buy a used box? What are the things to look out for at the breakers yard? If a box is idle for a year or more at a breakers will it work okay when installed? The box I'm going to look at is over an hour drive from where I live so I don't want to make a blunder!!!

Gearbox problems are not common, so you have a good chance of finding a second hand spare with plenty of life left in it. Have you tried eBay? I bought mine from a scrapyard that had their phone no in the ad, and dealt direct for £10 less.....
If you're going to look, check the gear linkage is compatible, there's no signs of oil leaks and so on.
If you can get the VIN from the donor car, you can check on Servicebox if the clutch, bell housing, etc. are the same on both cars.
Don't know about HDi 90 / BE series boxes, but with mine, the thrust bearing can only be used once, so you need a clutch kit. Don't forget to change the driveshaft oil seals and make sure you get the right grade/quantity of oil.
Welcome aboard BTW.

Re: Gearboxes for the HDi 90
Ill need to check this gearbox i have it might have a different thing embossed onto the casing, but i know it had the reverse below 5th gear, if there would be any differences i assume that they will only be with gear ratios i dont think there would have been a difference in the bell housing pattern, the gearbox that i have has also sat idle for a year but its been sitting inside my shed still attached to the engine.
Failing that there is a man about 5 miles from where i live who breaks 406's and has quite a few HDi 90s sitting around.
