So it could be anything then?
Usually the anti-pollution fault likes to pop up if you've been doing a lot of around-town driving and pop on the motorway for a long drive. All the built-up soot and carbon gets cleaned out and blown out the exhaust, confusing the sensors. It should go away by itself if that's the case.

I'd have thought it had done mainly short journeys (test drives) for the last couple of weeks to be honest.... I really want to give it a long run but for peace of mind I want the cam belt done before going more than a few miles... Cam belt is one thing not covered under the warranty.

Would it go into limp? It feels quite flat sometimes then suddenly it goes like stink.

Don't know if the 406 does it but my 307 will throw it up for pretty much anything from dpf issues to dead glow plugs. A quick planet session will tell you whether it's anything to fret about.

If it's like the 406 then 'anti-pollution system defective' is just a generic error message; it can mean almost anything. For example, I used to get this when my throttle position sensor was playing up.

You need to get the fault codes read in order to find out that is causing the error message.

Current: 407 2.2 HDi 170 & C6 2.7 HDi.
Former: 406 1.9 TD; 406 HDi 90; 407 2.2 160; 307cc 180; 508 HDi 140.
