2 stroke oil mixed with diesel
Hi guys,
Been reading up on this thread on the coupe club:
http://www.406coupeclub.org/PHPBB3/view ... 25&start=0
People are mixing 2 stroke oil with diesel at a 1:200 ratio, and seem to be getting better fuel economy, better throttle response as well as smoother engine running on cold days. Would it be advisable to add the 2 stroke oil to my saloon, being the 2.0 HDi 110 as opposed to the 2.2 HDi?
Seems to be working well for others, but I though I'd ask if it would be ok in my car before doing it.

Re: 2 stroke oil mixed with diesel
Hi Ben, I have been using 2 stroke in both my 2.2hdi and the wifes Picasso.
Joost on the toupe club was saying modern diesel fuel is lacking the necessary chemicals to lubricate the pump and the 2 stroke mineral oil replaces it.
I am still a relatively new user but Doggy is on his 6th tank at least...
I would say its worth a punt at the price.

Re: 2 stroke oil mixed with diesel
IIRC, I'm nearing the end of my 10th tankful, (first 'dose' out of bottle no. 4).
I'm convinced it's a good thing and may well be contributing to my consistent 50 mpg average.

Re: 2 stroke oil mixed with diesel
Great! Just to confirm, its mineral 2-stroke oil I need, and it will be ok in my DW10 engine? What sort of quantity to a tankfull should I go for?
Many thanks!

Re: 2 stroke oil mixed with diesel
You need API TC or JASO FB. I use the red stuff you get in Asda - £5 in store for 1 litre, used to be £3.62 on line, but now it's the same price.
http://direct.asda.com/ASDA-Motorcycle- ... lt,pd.html
I pour in 1/3 bottle, then top up with 65/70 litres of diesel, which is near as dammit 1:200, (333 ml x 200 = 66.7 litres).

Is this stuff ok? It's all my local garage have got and its £4. It's exactly the same bottle, so I assume an identical product? Only thing putting me off is the "motorcycle oil".

It says at the bottom:- Specification: API TC, JASO-FB

I believe 'low ash' is what you have to look for, which I presume is part of that specification.
Will be starting this in the 407 from November when I have 12 months data to compare against.

I ran my last 407 on 2-stroke mix and it quietens the engine down a treat it also added about 2-3 mpg to mine so i'm using it on the latest car as well

Re: 2 stroke oil mixed with diesel
How long will it be before 2-stroke oil gets really expensive?
Didn't Vegetable Oil go up in price once they realised it was being snapped up rather quickly by motorists?
I'm guessing that by adding this stuff it pays for itself in better mpg? and with the bonus of sweeter running. I hope the injectors don't complain about it although the mix is very light.

Re: 2 stroke oil mixed with diesel
Yeah, some of my old 4X4 mates were running 50/50 diesel with new veg oil, there was a time you could get 3 litres for 99p or 20l for £4.99 in some cheaper supermarkets. Now it's a lot more expensive, no wonder the price of chips is on the up!!Welly wrote:Didn't Vegetable Oil go up in price once they realised it was being snapped up rather quickly by motorists?

Re: 2 stroke oil mixed with diesel
Veg oil had fuel duty added to the price which is why it shot up. 2-stroke oil already has it built in.
As for its use, no reason not to, but only use the low ash type. (If it doesn't say it on the container, it probably isn't.)
Personally, I advocate Millers Eco stuff as it works out cheaper and is specifically made for the job, although any injector cleaner will do.
As for diesel fuel itself, it is an oil, it will lubricate all the moving parts of the system, and because of the majority of fuel pumped is returned to the tank, everything is always totally immersed in lubricant. Using 2-stroke oil as a lubricant is just a waste of money. One of the things it can do is pick up the muck from the exhaust and clean it out in passing, and it will help to keep the fuel system clean.

Re: 2 stroke oil mixed with diesel
Well I filled the old girl up the other day and added ~400ml of the oil above.
Observations after 170 miles:
- when cranking the engine while cold, it's much quieter
- when driving on a cold engine, it seems smoother and less clackety
- MPG has increased a little, 55mpg while driving 'enthusiastically' as opposed to the sub 50's under the same driving conditions
So yeah, I'd recommend it personally! Will be dosing with every fillup from now on
