Hdi Clattering sound
Just come back from a 1217mi jouney and this morning I go to start my Hdi up and it is making a bad clattering sound from the drivers side. I have no idea what it is, maybe the timing belt?

Sounds like crank pulley. You might see rust, rubber and fillings down the side of the engine,
Not a huge job if you sort it before it does much damage

Re: Hdi Clattering sound
Sounds like the bottom pulley??
Failure of the Bottom Pulley starts by making a ticking noise when cold and leads on to making a horrible loud smacking sound when it gets bad. As said brown dust and silver metal shards are normally seen around the area.

Re: Hdi Clattering sound
It drives fine but makes a loud noise. Is the pulley behind the drivers wheel

Pretty much - easiest to see if you remove the drivers side wheel arch liner.peugeot30v6 wrote:It drives fine but makes a loud noise. Is the pulley behind the drivers wheel

Re: Hdi Clattering sound
There's an easy check for this, take off the aux belt & start the engine if the noise has stopped you know it's your bottom pulley
If so go for the quality one from G.S.F & if your going to get the timing belt done you have to take this off anyway to change the timing belt
.
Oh while your at it might be a good idea to get the crankshaft oil seal that goes behind this lot as well, mine was weeping @ 82k.
It's a dealer only part but less than twenty quid & a oil leek will cause your timing belt to fail prematurely
Oh yeah it's the bottom pulley on the drivers side that you can see spining with the engine runing & the wheels on full left lock
Hope this is of some help DDD.

Re: Hdi Clattering sound
You could grab one from here which is a genuine one for 49.99 delivered instead of £143 from Peugeot, like dirtydirtydiesel says if you do grab one from GSF get the 'premium' one, the cheaper ones they sell generally fail inside 12 months.

Re: Hdi Clattering sound
Just finished everything. Oil change, cambelt, tensioner, waterpump, crank pulley, radiator fluid, new brake pads and new droplinks. Only cost 420. Not too bad.
Picked most of the parts up at G.S.F in Easton Road, Bristol.
Car is running good as new!

Re: Hdi Clattering sound
Thanks for posting this video. Mine has been making this exact same noise for the last week.
Soon as I've popped the bonnet to check this out the noise has stopped.
Could this just mean a loose pulley?
I'm no mechanic so any help is appreciated

Re: Hdi Clattering sound
Hi & welcome,
Sorry to hear you've got a mystery noise
Let it develop I suppose
For a noie at the driver's side of the engine there are lots of candidates besides the bottom pulley: the alternator, power steering pump, and air con all run off the aux belt besides idlers and a tensioner. You can use a long tube -- like out of a roll of tin foil or cling film -- to listen through to narrow down exactly where the noise is coming from (as and when the noise returns). If it is something that runs off the aux belt then the tone should change with engine speed, and if you take the belt off then the noise will of course stop.
