206 Clutch Trouble

Post by FarmerPug »

A bit of a problem with my sisters 206, it broke down this evening (well she pulled it in and put the hazards on) says the clutch wasn't working, it wouldn't go into gear and wasn't driving right.

I drive out to tow the car back home, but it seemed to drive ok, so i drove slowly back in the 406 and she followed in the 206, the 206 is back at the garage now, but i can't see anything wrong, the clutch still has plenty of bite in it, put it into 5th 4th and 3rd from stationary and it stalls straight away which is good.

So there is a problem with the cable or pedal, it does make a noise when being depressed like the cable is slipping, any ideas of what to go looking for?

The cable might be stretched,.

not much that'd matter, but enough for a lady to struggle with,

if it feels stiff,replace cable,

I think its an inability to be a bit more brutal with the clutch causing the trouble, other than a funny noise we can't get it to misbehave, but a new cable has been ordered from the dealers.

The 206 I had was hydraulically operated. What engine is in your sisters 206?

I put the new cable in yesterday, not too big a job just a bit tricky connecting the cable up to the pedal. I wrote this out just as a note to help remind myself of how to do it in the future, but if anyone needs it incase they are presented with a 206 then here it is:

Peugeot 206 1.1 Clutch Cable Replacement

-Undo the 3 10mm nuts securing the coolant reservoir in place
-pull the reservoir out of the way to gain better access to the area where the clutch cable enters the cabin
-undo the two 13mm nuts securing the clutch cable to the bulkhead
-remove the battery, and tray below the battery
-remove the air filter housing
-with the air filter housing removed there is sufficient room to push the clutch arm back enough to disengage the old cable
-push the arm back, pull the cable forwards and release it, remove the old cable routing it round the back of the engine bay
-with the cable slack, go to the clutch pedal
-there is a spring clip type thing above the pedal assembly, push it to the left or right, you will be working in the footwell looking up, it helps to remove the fuse box cover to gain access to the top of the clutch pedal with one hand
push the clip out of the way and the white plastic part of the clutch cable lifts up off the pedal
-withdraw the old cable and discard it
-insert the new cable through the bulkhead, there may be a white plastic sleeve on the new cable assembly remove and discard it, it does not go into the bulkhead which is a possible mistake if you do not discard it
-insert the cable, through the bulkhead, then go back to the clutch pedal and reconnect the plastic bit at the top of the pedal
-flick the spring thing back over the top of the pedal
-route the new cable round the back of the engine to the gearbox
-press the gearbox arm in fully and connect the cable up to the arm, then pull the whole cable back so the rubber bush type part rests securely in the holder
-reassemble everything and check the clutch works as it should, this should get rid of the clicking noise and the sticking cable.
