2003 Peugeot 406 2.0 HDI 11- Solid or DMF ?

Post by imartin »

Hi,

A couple of days ago I noticed a squeal coming from the clutch when depressing the pedal. There is also some vibration at the biting point as well.

The local garage has had a look at it and thinks it's the DMF.

(The car has covered about 76000 miles - I bought the car in 2011 with only 30000 on the clock. The clutch pedal has always had a high biting point ever since I've had it)

To replace the clutch and fit a solid flywheel conversion kit and new cylinder I've been quoted about £1350. It's over £1700 if I want to stick with a new DMF.

I've seen on this forum that some of the earlier models of 110 hdi were originally fitted with solid flywheels, but I am not sure if that might have been a different model of engine or not.

Has anyone here had any experience of retro fitting a solid flywheel to replace a DMF?

Will it make the engine that much rougher to drive?

I've checked a few other forums too but there seems to be conflicting advice as to whether a solid flywheel is likely to be ok or to cause damage to other parts in the drive-train.

Any advice or experience greatly appreciated.

The problem you describe sounds more like the clutch release bearing failing.

If you are wanting to replace the DMF then replace it with another DMF.
I know some people have done the solid conversion, but I wouldn't do it.
You can buy a DMF for about £300 and a clutch for about £100.
Why a new cylinder?
The prices quoted are totally unrealistic...way over the top

Thanks very much both for the speedy reply!

I might be mistaken over what was said by the garage - I'm expecting a written estimate/quote through the post.

It might very well have been the release bearing.

I was surprised at the cost and will be seeing if I can get another quote from another local independent garage.

Are there any recommendations as to which manufacturer of clutch and DMF ?
