Difficulty in selecting 2nd and 4th gear after new clutch.

Post by jensendk »

Hi i'm new to this great forum.
I have just replaced the clutch on my great 406 2.0 HDI (after 470.000km). After i have put the gearbox back in place, and reassembled everything. I have great difficulty in selecting 2nd and 4th gear. I seems like the cables has been shrinking a few milimeters. I have gone thru everything, and have'nt found any mistakes. What can be wrong? I suspect the cablebracket mounted on the gearbox, but i can not see anything wrong with it.

I take it you have checked the oil level, would be a good idea to change it a that mileage too.

Which gearbox and gear change pattern do you have? (Is reverse beside 1st, or beside 4th).

Can you select reverse as easily as before?

Check the cables where they go into the box under the gear lever, make sure they are not loose. Get some one to put it in and out of gear while you watch the ends.

I have just replaced the oil. I replaced the driveshaft seals when i mounted the new clutch.
Reverse is beside 1st.
I will check the cables. I have a friend, that is Peugeot mechanic. He said, that the outer cable is stretching over time. To check this, he told me to take of the balljoints, put the gearbox in 2nd and check if the balljoints would fit directly over the balls. They did'nt, the cables looked like they were approx. 5mm to short. So i will have to invest in 2 new cables. They are pretty expensive in Denmark(100£ each) :(

When I had a similar problem with a 307, (a snapped cable) - I found a UK scrapyard offering a second hand gear change mechanism, (gear lever, base + cables), for £45 with free next day delivery.
