Engine mount?

i borrowed a friends 406 and when i switch off the engine it doesnt vibrate like mine.

i never noticed it until i borrowed hers. its like the engine is too free to move. does this make sense.

im thinking an engine mount maybe but before i get out all my ramps etc how do i test an engine mount for excessive play

The rear lower engine mount is a very common failure on the HDi, simple test is to pop the bonnet and blip/rev the engine from idle....if the engine lurches forward by any more than about 50mm the the mount is goosed. With a new mounting the engine will not move more than about 15mm max.

It's not too good have a 'loose' engine as it tugs on the wires and hoses too much and damaged the eggsauce downpipe flexi. With a new mount in place it'll drive like a much newer car.

i presume the rear lower is the one inside the drivers front wheel well?
found it on gsf for £16

just done the blip test and the bottom of the engine at th front moves down by 3-4ins and the top of the engine moves uo by a few inches.

Yes the engine will try to turn towards the front grille like that.

The mount is up behind the sump and is integral to the drive shaft so is a bit of an arse to change, some have sucess ramming the thing full of rubber hose/silicone until they can get it changed properly:

perfect. thanks for pics. looks like i just undo the bolt throughthe centre of the mount whilst holding the nut behind it. knock it or pull it out and force the new one in and refasten. looks like a 30min job so will set aside a full weekend ..lol.

It should be removed (along with the driveshaft) and pressed out on a hydraulic press BUT members here have had success in doing it 'in situ' by burning it out, cutting, swearing, and pressing the new one in using threaded rod and nuts & washers etc.
