Hi Gents
My 406 2.1TD Executive 1998 has developed an engine oil leak, which two garages have told me is the crank shaft oil seal (the one closest to the gearbox). So it's a gearbox out job, which my garage are going to do.
Apparently this rubber radial seal at the end of the crankshaft can actually cause a circumferential wear groove in the crankshaft from friction between it and the crankshaft. We are talking less than 1mm but I saw an example in a garage.
Apparently the simple solution to this is something called a Speedi Sleeve, a clever metal sleeve that's tapped on with a mallet and the supplied 'cup' drift. Then when in position the raised collar is then snapped off and voila! there's the fix - no more wear groove. And a standard seal will still fit over this.
What I want to know is what size Speedi Sleeve to buy, which involves knowing the (unworn) dia of the end of the crankshaft where the seal sits.
Anyone happen to know this, or know how/where I can find out?
Thanks
Steve

Re: Crankshaft End Diameter for Speedi Sleeve Fix
Is there any chance it's actually written on the seal?

Re: Crankshaft End Diameter for Speedi Sleeve Fix
Hi Steve
Yes, this is a possibility, although I'm doubtful.
But ideally I want to be able to give my garage the correct Speedi Sleeve when I give them the car, so they can crack on with it. Particularly as they're not familiar with the product.
Cheers

The seal appears to be 110x90x7, so presumably the inside diameter is the 90 and that's what you're looking at. Maybe...
