Good day all, this is fascinating stuff, my 406 (2002 HDI 2.2) is in horribly limp mode, takes about 30 seconds to get to 40mph and will only go up hills at 10mph. removed the particulate filter (it was well blocked), no difference. I am leaving lots of smoke and the car is undrivable. Had booked in to a Pug main dealer tomorrow but suspect he will want to supply me a new particulate filter as well as the fluid etc. and I do not want to go that route if I can avoid it. Have ordered a Galleto on Ebay, hopefully will arrive tomorrow.
Please can anybody supply me with a de-fapped ecu file (email to [email protected])?
Does it matter whether I change the file before taking to a local garage to clear the faults, or should I get the faults cleared first? Does anybody know of a low cost device which will allow me to read and clear faults?
Wha a useful site this is!

Hi,
I have emailed you links to both the maps and ECUSafe (read my previous posts for info on what this does)
Limp mode can be caused by many things, not just the FAP, I assume you were getting the particulate fault error on the screen? If you had read the codes before taking a hammer to the filter you may have been able to fix your problems by simply starting a regen of the filter. It is always better to find out which errors you have before taking irreversible action!
Anyway, now you have no FAP you might as well go the whole hog and de-fap your ECU. You should flash the file before going to have the codes cleared otherwise the errors will simply re-appear on the trip back from the garage!
Rather than just getting the codes cleared check what faults it is reporting so that you can be sure that by de-fapping you have fixed the issue
An ELM 327 of ebay and a copy of scantool should in theory allow you to read and clear the codes (though I haven't tried one).

Hi Paul & Welcome to the site.
Lots of smoke is not normally a DPF problem - likely causes are air leaks between turbo & engine or a dodgy MAF. Getting the fault codes / descriptions is the way to go.
Removing the FAP and updating the ecu to ignore it is always a good move, but may not resolve this issue.
AFAIK there are very few options on code readers for 2.2 HDi's - PP2000 or some of the top-end professional systems will work, but little else.
If you add your location, someone nearby may be able to help you.

Re: Newbie
Thanks guys for the comments, help and advice, all much appreciated.
I should have mentioned that I had already tried the constant revs for a few minutes etc. to renergise or whatever the DPF, but I think that (a) because there was none of the tricky fluid in the tank to heat up the process and (b) so much black smoke going into the DPF that I would have thought that the process would have been cancelled out. Anyway when I took the DPF off it was at least 50% clogged on its face. History, that, it isn't there now.
Onwards; the Galetto does not work out of the box with Windows 7 or Windows Vista, so will be an issue for anybody who is trying to use it with a Computer less than 2 years or so old. There were quite a few plaintiff cries on the web about this.
The solution is:- When you plug the Galetto cable in (actually it is a generic USB to serial converter) Windows 7 and Vista will log it as hardware and it will show up in "Control Panel" then "Devices and Printers" under it's own heading of "unspecified" as "EOBD2-1260". To add a driver and make it work, make sure that you are on line, then click on the "EOBD2-1260" icon which will give you another window. Select the "Hardware" tab, then the "General" tab; click on "change settings" then select the "driver" tab. Click on "Update Driver" then select "Search Automatically" etc. Sit back and Windows will go out on line and find a generic driver which is certified and will work.
Once I'd sorted that, the reprog was very easy, and the car is (at least over an initial 4 mile test) a whole lot better. Still not right of course, but OK to go home and back to work for now. I'll get a local Garage to kill the error codes and then see which ones come back. I'm happy enough to get some things looked at by a Main Dealer, but at least now I know that the lack of yukky fluid isn't going to hit me in the wallet.
Thanks again!

Hi Paul,
Glad you made some progress! You have to physically tell the ecu to manually re-gen the FAP, at which point it does it all itself, controlling the revs and melting anything within 20 yards of the exhaust!
You cant just leave it at high revs for a bit to clear it, only other way is to take it on a long high speed motorway run and hope it convinces the car to start the process, but since you don't have one anymore you don't need to worry about it

Re: Newbie
Hi Guys,
Just thought I would give you a quick update on my DPF situation. Hopefully it may help someone.
At the weekend I finally got around to looking at this on my car having driven around in 'limp' mode for a good few weeks. I purchased the Galletto cable and sorted out an xp laptop and got to work. I read the original ECU map file and saved it and then attempted to write Doggy's 180_nofap_remap (despite warnings from Benzcuk that it might be risky!). In short it failed to write and the program stopped working. This left me unable to read the ECU and in a state of panic fearing the ECU was locked. After several failed attempts I gave up. I returned about 3 hours later, restarted the laptop and it read the ECU. I saved and this time decided to write the defapped file that I processed through ECU safe and it worked. All dashboard lights have remained off for a couple of days and a good 200 miles or so!
I guess the message for other users is that using ECU safe is the safe option and that you should ensure you know exactly what you are doing before writing someone elses map file to the ECU. (Advice I stupidly ignored dreaming of better performance!)
Anyway, I now have a car that doesn't know it has a DPF which is good, but i have some questions.
1. Does anyone know how long/how far I can drive like this before I get problems......and what will the result be? I ask because I probably wont have time to physically remove the DPF for a few weeks and I have some long journeys planned. Should I go back to the old map file and carry on in limp mode until I can remove the filter?
2. I have seen the 'how to' guide on removing the DPF but can anyone give me a more detailed guide of how to do this with pics if possible and bearing in mind I am not competent mechanic.
3. How do I remap my ECU safe defapped file to 180bhp?
Cheers,
muttley1984

1. Impossible to say, (unless you can monitor the differential pressure), but in any case not more than a few hundred miles.muttley1984 wrote:Hi Guys,

2. It's in my 'howto', also sign up for the coupe club, view their guide on removing / pressure washing as it's got more / better pics, (then attack it 'wiv an 'ammer').
3. You can't. Do you know why your original download attempt failed - from your description it appears the laptop / Galletto / software bombed out during the download. If this is the case, it's nothing to do with the file's compatability with your car, as you didn't get far enough to find out. Assuming yours is a post late 2001 car with lift-for-reverse gearchange it should be OK. I use it & at least a dozen coupes do too
