Still require Brim to Brim to calculate true Fuel consumption.
Over 18,000 of accurate monitoring my 2003 406 HDi has averaged 51mpg. The on board computer is always between 6.5 and 6.8 mpg short of this.
Miles odometer is as far as I can reasonably check using GPS and motorways mileposts within 1% long (?).
Generally 406 mileage performance strongest on nice steady A and B roads where high 50s mpg easily attained.
Motorways not its strongest hand. 29mph/1000rpm is not very long geared compared with many modern rivals which are reaching out toward 40mph/1000.
Long journey sitting the 70 limit should be good for 54-56mpg.

(self confessed fuel consumption measuring geek)

The most economical is 2800 to 3000 rpm in 5th, unfortunately for me 3000 rpm in 5th is 90mph
If it doesn't fit you need a bigger hammer

My last 406 110hp estate would always do in excess of 60mpg on a longish journey with 71 mpg being obtained between here and Scotch corner last year. My present one only seems to manage about 60 mpg on journeys with around 50 mpg on average but when I did a brim to brim check it was actually doing better than the computer displayed, so its probably similar to the old one.

These figures were obtained generally at about 60 mph and mostly below 2000 rpm.
