FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR

Post by panadero »

Does anyone know if the fuel pressure regulator attached to the hp pump on a 406 2.0 hdi (04) can be tested off the car?

If so I will remove it and take it to be tested rather than drive the car to the garage as it could well stall en route. Alternatively I am thinking of simply replacing it with a cheap second hand regulator as a matter of course just to see if this will cure the fault.

The usual problem with them is that the filter gets blocked, it's the thing on the end that looks like a stainless steel tube only it has minute holes in it which I can't see although it has a rough feel to it. If you can find a way of cleaning it fine but I fitted a cheap secondhand one and it was OK. As long as it comes from a working car it should be alright. Some of them don't have the filter.

I have just got round to replacing mine  .

Here's a few pictures with some descriptions.

So here's the fuel pressure regulator ( old one in picture ) with the fuel filter & housing removed for easy access.
You need to clean up the fuel filter housing spotlessly clean BEFORE removing the fuel pipes, so as not to contaminate
the fuel system
It'll is also a good idea to block off the three fuel pipes ( good filter kits include these)
I also swing the three fuel pipes out of the way for easier access :D

It's also a good idea to spotlessly clean the fuel pump where the pressure regulator fit's.
For cleaning I use AC90, it's just like WD40, GT85 ect, but I get mine from work

Just for the record the tools needed are 3/8 wrench, 150mm extention & 75mm extention, 10mm socket, 6mm hex bit that fit's into socket extention, 3/8 wobble bar & torx 30 bit + small hammer, small bit of soft wood (12mm x 150mm) aprox, tub for old diesel & tooth brush for cleaning :)
Old & new fuel pressure regulators.jpg
Old & New Fuel Pressure Regulators, genuine Bosch one from Ebay :cheesy:
The new metal gasket does not come with the regulator, I got one from? , yes ebay
New fuel pressure regulator fitted.jpg
New fuel pressure regulator fitted, before fitting lube the o-ring with clean diesel.
Fuel pressure regulator completed.jpg
All back together :cheesy: , just the engine cover to replace,
I would strongly advise fitting a new fuel filter when carrying this out, & fill up the filter housing 3/4 full with clean diesel or diesel cleaner BEFORE refitting the new filter :) .

Take for test drive & find out that it's no fxxxxxg different :x.

So I can only hope it cures my low fuel pressure when towing  .

My old perfectly serviceable unit will be cleaned as per pro Steve's instructions from (HDI tuning) , fitted with new seals and gasket
& Advertised on here & ebay.
When I get back from my holiday 8) .

Hope this is of some help to other's.

Ps I checked my fuel pressure using pp2k & I am seeing 1345 bar, so no problems there :?
I will be quizzing you all on injector correction values though when I get back .

I have never had an injector fail on a 406 Hdi 8 valve - there's always a first time of course.

Leak-off test would be my next move.

As a matter of interest, how bad are your injector correction values?

Hi Doggy,
Yes I'm thinking the same, from memory 2 were + something & 2 were - something
I will have a session with pp2k & record the values.
