Radiator hose retaining clip

Hello All

I am looking for the retaining clip for the bottom left connection to the radiator (viewed from front of car) for a 1998 2.0 petrol auto 406 GLX.

Realise this is a rather niche requirement...

Have managed to source radiator and hose after much waiting and searching but some bright spark apparently threw away the retaining clip that came with the radiator.

Have the car all ready to fill with coolant and finally use but dare not run it up without the union held together properly.

Does anyone know where one can be obtained, or a part number etc etc? Anything off another car that can be "adapted"... Any experience of this problem and have an alternative solution...?

Have called my local Peugeot dealer who have been very sympathetic but they say the clip was only supplied with radiator and not sold separately.

Happy to expand on detail for anyone interested.

(FYI: I am the happy and content owner of a 406 90HDI Rapier estate which has served me faultlessly for 10 plus years.
I was offered the one referred to in this post for minimal money and it is very low mileage and I believe worth perservering with.
Realise others will think differently but that is not the subject of this post.)

...which implies it's a 32-50mm worm drive hose clip, (or jubilee clip if you're ancient like wot I am)

Is it not the same clip as the one retaining upper radiator hose? If it's the same maybe you could try sourcing that instead (or maybe even try to buy new thermostat housing just for the clip)

It is not a jubilee or worm drive clip... I have an abundance of those.

The bottom union is of a push in socket type with a recessed metal ring on the hose end. There are slots in the outside of the socket which, when the hose is pushed home, line up with a groove in the ring on the hose end. The clip pushes into the slots and sits in the groove on the hose end to keep the joint together.

The radiator in the picture is not the same.
On this one (1301FP or 1301 GD, from memory) the bottom left socket is at 45 degree angle.

I gather that by virtue of being a 2.0 petrol auto with Aircon, the radiator is a different design to many others.
(It was difficult enough to get!)

Am thinking it must be like some kind of horseshoe type arrangement in springy wire?

No mention of the wire clip though I seem to remember them being a nuisance. I've no idea if there's a variation in the size of the clip but my HDi had them, so I presume a lot of later 406's were so inflicted, might be worth a squint in the scrappers?

As far as I remember the bottom hose on my HDi used one of them, both the Hayneses (D8 & 9) have the same pictures and blurb. I couldn't say if it would be the same size, so I don't know if the size is common but they are used on other radiators. It must be worth a look at your friendly local breakers.

Wul, the picture you have posted looks like it may fit the bill.
The radiator has 3 slits angled just like the clip!

Can you tell me where you got it?

As Steve says, your best bet would be to find that in your local breakers.

Anyway, have you tried using the top radiator hose clip in the bottom hose? Because as I remembered it, they share the same locking mechanism.

All of the other connections on this particular radiator have ordinary jubilee or compression type clips so it is not possible to steal a clip from elsewhere to try.

This radiator is different to the one on my HDI estate and, according to the mechanics at the garage where I work, (with 40 years plus experience between them) is unlike any other radiator on a 406 they have ever seen. I was only able to obtain it by mail order having contacted Peugeot themselves and three other aftermarket factors who could not source it.

If there was another clip I could have tried, I promise I would have!

Guess I will need to trawl scrapyards as suggested, not averse to the idea anyway...

I just checked on my car (which should have the same kind of engine as you do). If your thermostat housing is still standard (not modified) you should see there's a clip holding the upper radiator hose in place. When I removed that clip, it looked the same as the pictured I posted before.

Thanks again Wul for taking trouble to post. I had not registered previously that there was an identical clip on the stat housing...

I am pleased to report, however, that having sent your photo of the clip to my local Peugeot dealership parts department, a more helpfully-minded person there was kind enough to do some searching and has advised me that the clip IS, in fact, still available after all and has ordered me some, delivery expected tomorrow!

It seems that the first person I spoke to either didn't know what I meant, or felt that finding a low-value part for a 25 year old car wasn't worth his while. (I talk to a lot of dealerships in my work and that outlook isn't entirely unfamiliar )

Politics aside...

I will post the part number when I receive the part in case it helps anyone else similarly afflicted in the future.

Update for interested parties:

My local Peugeot agency were able to supply necessary clip after I managed to talk to a more helpful person in the parts department as described early.

The clip supplied is part number 133995.

Price about £2.50.

It seems they are still used on modern models.
