genuine pug means nothing though, pug do not fabricate the parts, valeo/continental/gates etc do
pug just stock them.
find out the manufacturer they stock and source a different supplier to not get butt raped

so the new tensioners where £150 each then........... ok id like to see the reciept for that

What is a tensioner anyroad? Is it like a pulley? He said 'it's got rollers, not like a normal engine' or summat.

a tensioner is basically a idle roller that you can adjust to tension the belt.

they all have "rollers" lol no idea what this mechanic is on about

they are a wheel that rolls on the back of the belt you "swing" the wheel to tighten the belt thats it :P

usually you have 1 idler and 1 tensioner as seen in this picture
Image

thats the 2l16v kit and costs £40+vat contitech brand (continental)
i cant see how 1 more tensioner + a waterpump and a longer belt will make it £700

I think my turbo's belt+tensioner+pump only came to around £50. That's dealer belt+tensioner and the pump from a factor

Shame I can't fit the f****** things because the f****** engine leave no f****** clearance :(
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

Here is the itemised bill. Can experts check this as I intend to take this further - small claims court etc

Labour on site - £420
Timing belt - £72.13
Bracket plate - £114.66
Roller - £56.12
Roller - £55.64
Waterpump - £80.06
Waterpump gasket - £1.17
Fan/aux belt - £17.20
Tensioner - £98.56
Roller - £29.98
Self tap screws - £8.70
Anti-freeze - £23.80
Enviro parts disposal £3.50
Workshop consumables £3.50
Oil service - £20.00
Peugeot V6 oil filter - £9.85
15W-40 engine oil 4.75l - £33.25
Pressure test labour - £24.00

Total £1,072.12
Vat £187.62
Total £1,259.74

Description of work done
1. Supply and fit genuine cambelt, tensioners, guides and waterpump
2. Carry out an oil and filter service
3. Carry out a coolant system pressure test to evaluate coolant leak

Notes: 'We have had to install modified Peugeot supplied parts to this vehicle. This is due to Peugeot having superceeded (sic) the origional factory fitted parts. Customer advised prior to fitment.

After collection, I noticed water dripping from the front bumper. I later ascertained that this was screenwash as the front wiper washers were now not operational, meaning that they have either been snagged, damaged or left unconnected.

Lies you can get the parts to fit your engine easily it is not a 1940's mga its a late 1990s french saloon

Thanks Malachy this is useful advice. They claimed to have only used genuine Pug parts, so would my nearest dealer be the place to phone up and find out?

I just called them, McKinnon Motors in Croydon, and the parts manager there was very helpful. He said that all parts were supplied to the garage in question and yes, they did cost that amount. He also said that the labour at the dealership would have been £546 plus VAT. He said that all the tensioners would have needed replacing at that stage as it's a V6.

I still need to get the bloody windscreen washers sorted, damned if I'm doing that myself - it must be a snagged hose or something.

Indeed. A 4L Castrol bottle costs 16 quid from Halfrauds. Couldn't imagine a stealer charging more than this.

I agree with Malachy's comments. When I had my water pump replaced by my Peugeot independent dealer, they charged me 40-odd quid incl VAT. And they use Pug's parts only. Not sure how a water pump can cost over 80 quid!
