Much has been said on this before but I have noticed my rattle is becoming more, er, rattly.
You cannot reproduce the rattle standing still and reving the engine because it only ever does it under load between 2000 and 2500 revs.
I always felt that the rattle was a characteristic sound of a Common Rail direct injection Diesel but was bothered to think it may have become worse.
The car still pulls well with no smoke etc/
Are we all 'rattlers' or should I be concerned?

rattle
Mine rattles like a good un most of the time from ....... well I don't really know but it stops abruply at 3200RPM, which as I understand from Bosch is when the second stage fueling comes in. They said it was a prob a bit of dirt or something. Well I think it's more the something than dirt cos it comes and goes, but always with routine - never on idle always on load without effecting performance and with no smoke. I don't intend changing injectors to cure the problem since the stealers also know about this 'problem', they just say ignore it, and at about £250 per new injector I think I will!

Re: rattle
all pug HDi's as far as i know use 3 stage injection, pre injection, main injection and post injection, and it always uses that patternmuffindell wrote:Mine rattles like a good un most of the time from ....... well I don't really know but it stops abruply at 3200RPM, which as I understand from Bosch is when the second stage fueling comes in.
the reason you think it goes away after 3200rpm, is because the engine drone and the exhaust noise drown it out
common rail diesels always rattle, all diesels do, its known as ignition lag and is an unavoidable part of combustion, it is at its worst when the engine is at idle, cold or laboured at low engine speed
Welly, if you think yours are getting abnormally rattly, then your injectors are probably showing there age, what mileage are you at?
as you have no specific problems other than the noise dont worry about it

rattle
Naaaaaaa mine definately stops at 3200rpm - the engine goes quiet like ........ well like the rattle's gone away, it's not the droaning of the engine that makes it sound so sweet and smooth afterwards!

I must say mine goes quiet above 3000 too
James> My mileage is 112000 with full history.
I had a 140 mile round trip/blast yesterday and it sounded better after that whereas it had been exclusively plodding door to door for weeks before this.

im not sure when it cuts in, but there is a device in your HP pump that shuts down 2 of the pistons when the engine isnt under load or when cruising to save fuel, it may also cut out over 3k revs, so when the pump is only using 2 pistons you will have a low rail pressure, causing a slight diesel knock
