rear brakes

Post by darrenwall »

after putting up with my non existant handbrake for a few months im finally going to try and sort it out . my rear brake pads are starting to grind sometimes so ill be changing them in the next few weeks , i have disc brakes with the handbrake shoes inside the drum part but wot i wanted to know is do i have to wind the calipers back in or do they just push straight back in like the front calipers and wot are the handbrake shoes like to change ? thanks

if the handbrake is on a shoe system then the pistons should just push back in, mines on drum brakes on the rear and the handbrakes crap on that too!!!! :D

was having a go at sorting mine out yesterday.
not too difficult if you follow haynes. The piston just pushed back in. didnt need to wind it.
might need to wind the brake shoes back in slightly to get the drum/disc off. My shoe adjuster had seized on the passenger side so a lump hammer sorted it out.

Get some long nose pliars and unclip on of the springs near the adjuster and it makes the shoes easier to get off.

Now all I have to do is wait until it stops raining so I can get some heat on the handbrake adjuster under the car, as the locking nut has seized, and I have put so much realease oil and wd40 that its a little flamable.

currently I have only been able to adjust it so that 6 clicks is semi on, and 7 clicks locks the rear drums solid.

Decided I dont like the brake pipes going to the rear caliper. Never really worked on 406 brakes before but the pipes go all the way from the servo to the caliper making it hard to take the caliper off, and position it somewhere so that the lines dont get damaged. So much more happy working when there are flexable rubber brake lines.
