Thanks MJB - I have noticed the valve in the cap and it does appear to vent every now and then (I can hear it hissing/squeaking when I stop the car and pop the bonnet)

so what you're saying is that even if it was overfilled, it would just self-vent (i.e cold to hot fluid pressure build-up which will then overflow through the pressure release valve in the cap)

I'll have a go at bleeding first - I like nipples

I'm going to replace the coolant temp sensor next and go from there I think - sounds like the cheapest option to start with. I can live without A/C (no fan) but cant be doing with overheating when sat in traffic!

Bottom hose cold - is the top of the radiator warm?

Enjoy the nipples :D

Yeah radiator feels warm(ish) at the top but nowhere near as warm as the feed hose (I know this sounds obvious but its a considerable difference and remember my fan isnt working!)

I just have the feeling its blocked or not pumping around - all my other cars I've owned in the past its been pretty obvious that the coolant is circulating/pumping etc.. this just feels like its working through convection!
