Still Wobbling

Post by tux2006 »

Had all my alloys balanced the other day at my local tyre place as they weren't feeling quite right, as it turned out every wheel was out of balance which I found abit odd :?

Anyway now its even worse! getting alot of wobbling through the wheel particularly around 60-70mph and alot of noticable wobbling through the body of car at lower speeds.
Is this just down to the workmanship? I know the guy did it as I was stood there watching him so I know I haven't been 'kwik-fit-ed' so to speak!

Could it be down to distorted driveshaft? at least the wheel bolts have stopped coming loose...

Hm what tyres are you using? I had this problem and it turned out to be crap tyres. No amount of wheel balancing fixed it until I got some new ones.

yeh its lowered so I would expect abit of wobbling - I can live with that - but it just seems worse after supposedly getting it all checked

It has nankang's on at the moment -cheap I know!- but thats all I could afford at the time of buying the wheels (poor student) so when their time is up I will make sure I get a decent set on there.

Just wondered if it would be worthwhile experimenting by sticking the old steelies (that I know are balanced right) back on to see if there's any improvement?

I would jack up eack corner and carefully look at the inner rim whilst spinning the wheel by hand (you might have to run the engine in gear on the fronts, but carefully jacked of course).

With lowered suspension and bigger wheels/low profile tyres they can easily buckle on the inner rim. They will balance on a machine but then wobble when the weight of the car is on the tyre.

I buckled 2 wheels on the sallye a while ago, had them rebalanced as I didnt realise they were buckled and they balanced fine. Went for MOT and the mot noticed that they werent rotating right, so I had them straightened and rebalanced which was done fine and it went through its MOT.
All this time I was getting wobble. Replace the 2 wheels and everything was sorted....no more wobble.

When I had my clutch and DMF changed on the 406, the donuts put the directional tyres on the wrong side, and I got wobbble. I noticed, and put them back on the correct side, and everything was sorted.

I have a friend who got some GTI-6 cyclones resprayed, balanced with new tyres. It wasnt noticed that they were buckled until they got put on the car, and they got steering wobble.

Check for buckles ;)
