intercooler - - - info needed please

Post by nipper76 »

hello peeps... :cheesy:

ok i just had the front end of my car fixed after a little accident,
they had to replaced the fans + rad + intercooler.
now it want new, it was from the scrappers, but i proberly want to invest in a new one at some poit as this intercooler looks a bit flakey.
anyhow..
dose the intercooler need to have any coolent stuff of any kind??
as someone told me you have to get them filled.

can you do it yourself / how and what to use??

would they have lost the coolent stuff out of it when it came from the scrap heap??

how can i see if it needs filling??

anything else i should know??

sorry if these are stupid questions but we gotta start learning somewhere

my main reasons for these questions is, my car dosnt seem to have as much UMPH to it now they "fixed" it.

many thanks peeps

dan :P

The intercooler is an air-to-air intercooler. In effect it's just an empty radiator with hot air from your turbo going through it. When you drive along the cooler outside air passes over the intercooler and cools down the air inside it. This cooler air is then more beneficial to the engine, if you pump hot air into an engine the performance will reduce.

If you think you have lost some power try looking to see if any oil is leaking from the intercooler and check the tightness of the large hose clips attached to it, also follow these large hoses around and check them all for tightness.

The intercoolers can fail (not so much on Diesels) and they normally spew out oil and make a loud whoosing sound.

well all the pipes seem ok, apart from some small black pipes that are quite solid that go from one side of the can to the other in a S shape, just under/next to the rads + fans.
i part of the pipe is bent, when it should be straight, i have no idea what this pipe is for, could this be a problem??

many thanks
