D9'ers - Help prevent your a/c pipes corroding

Post by Welly »

Further to Puggy's unfortunate a/c pipe failure (seen here in green)......

Image

I thought I would look at mine and see if there was anything I could do to help prevent this happening.

I have spoken to my a/c man and he has tried several things over the years including copper grease! Apparently water and road salts etc become trapped between the rubber lined clip and the ali tubing and coupled with a bit of vibration they all conspire to corrode the tubing at the clip position.

The key to help prevent this is to repell water and provide a protective film on the ali tube.

So I set about doing this simple exercise:

Image

I sprayed some WD40 silicone stuff directly and liberally onto the rubber.

A close up of the soaked rubbers, this should help repell any corrosives

I reckon if you do this, say, once a month then the pipe should never corrode here and you will save yourself some dollas.

Fin.

I saw Top Gear recently and James May said he was "giving it the beans" so I thought I would try it out, why not?. I'll just need to wait till the Custard's finished though :|

No it's not been steam cleaned actually. I have been 'detailing' it every now and then when I get bored.

The engine bay was just dusty and dirty when I bought it, but luckily no oil anywhere.

Generally you need to go round everywhere with an old toweling damp cloth quite a few times and then I use AutoGlym Bumper Care on EVERYTHING, the engine cover, all the plastics and the hoses.

Eventually after a few goes it gets cleaner and cleaner until it stays pretty good.

It helps if you wipe the electrical connectors and hose clips etc to give it a new look.

ooooo, not a heinz man (or tesco value beans like me)

anyway, some sound advice there, I'll be out there sorting that out on the weekend.

prevention is better than cure as they.

Also, I saw the b***ard of a job it is to replace those pipes on puggy's very car on the weekend.
