Just about to take the plunge and purchase one of these.

Any advice and do they go as well as suggested?

Anything to look out for?

The 136 is a bit more complicated as it has a 16V head (driven from a chain from one cam to the other) and a Variable Vane Turbo (which is fine).

Some say that the 136 is more trouble than the 110 but I say this would be down to poor maintenance of the cambelt/pulleys as the 136 is under more strain.

Performance wise they will pull very strongly and in the future will respond well to a remap to around 160BHP

The main areas are:

The Particulate Filter is prone to throw up numerous faults on the multi function display and is usualy down to the differential pressure sensor failure, this filter requires the maintenance of a fuel additive to clean it out which will put you in the hands of the dealer

Bottom Pulley failure (very loud ticking/metallic knocking)
Dual Mass Flywheel/clutch failure (expensive) make sure the clutch feels right with no juddering, slipping, or squeeky/chattery noises sometimes it won't slip until everything is nice and hot after a good run.
Rear engine mount can tear through the rubber isolator (excess engine movement)
Radiator cooling fan/relays can fail
The a/c condensor will almost certainly fail at 7 years old and need replacing (no a/c).
Throttle position sensors can fail
Handbrakes are rubbish and can require a fairly major overhaul to get right.
Fuel lift pump can crap out at about 120000 miles (can send little bits up the fuel lines, not very nice)
The High Pressure pump can fail but we never really see that on here.

Engines and gearboxes are tough, only to be let down slightly by iffy build quality in areas and the odd electrical gremlins (although to be honest the 406 behaves it'self electrically mostly).

Don't be put off at all, but study the service history with care to make sure you get a well cared for car etc.

If you find a decent car, they are cheap enough and you will enjoy it for sure.

Im afraid its all true though. A 406 when its working is a cracking car to drive. Does everthing you want it to. I look on it as my second child

costs about the same every year. I may start going over past receipts and see how much it owes me for fun I now its nearly 2k this year and last.

I am in much debate with myself over that one fella.

You see I love the cruise and comfort and the heated armchairiness of the 406 but I also love racers like the Integra I had.

At the same time I crave an Audi A4 or something German. I would have liked a Golf GTTDi 150 but feel they are still over-priced and a bit bland especially as the new model is out there too

I have to say me myself was looking at a golf gt tdi 150 but yes they are still stupid money so i brought my pug more for less but not the case now i feel

. I must admit though Have been passenger in my friends which is a tdi and getting back into the pug the vw was far more comfortable. What integra did you have?

The Integra was a rare DA6 XSi Jap Import it was the 160BHP 1.6VTEC with LSD and weighed about as much as a training shoe

Here it is in action

I regret selling it now, silly boy, it wanted about £1,500.00 spending on it to make it absolutely spot on but I chickened out. Have wasted much more since then (including the wobbly Mazda MX6 V6 I replaced it with).

As far as I can tell the Golf's only really suffer with Air Flow meters and wishbones, it might have been worth stretching to a Golf really

Mind you, if you look at the sh*t list for any make of car (unless its Japanese) it makes depressing reading. I had considered a 320D estate after a lad at work got one on a 52 plate. So I did a bit of research and the common fault list for it is enormous, and bloody expensive. Makes the dmf/clutch issue pale into insignificance. Even funnier was him taking the piss out of my French car and then his car breakin down on 3 seperate occasions (one of them being the turbo). Oh how I laughed

Yes, I had looked into the 320d's and the failing Turbo is very common. Also problems with air flow meters and blocked crankcase breathers.

Makes the whole point of owning a Diesel a waste of time really when you get massive bills.

Apparently after 2002 the Turbo was revised and should not break.

Nice welly, always loved hondas myself. I use to own a fast road/ track car. It was a pug 205 mi16 on carbs with a gti6 box in it had i think around 270 bhp and the same amount of torque i paid 8k for it it owed the guy around 15k Would eat scubbys and was great fun he brought a lancia delta integrale evo. Then would not stop bothering me as he wanted the pug back. Imagine a mint looking 1.9 gti standard apart from being lowered with 1.9 alloys sprayed metalic black and diamond cut on the outside. He sold his shitty lancia as it was to slow and no one would race him and i sold the pug back to him for 12k. Still regreat selling it back to him.

Dont like the sound of that im looking at 520d i think i will wait and see the faults that encounters before i buy one. And out way pros and cons. I must say though apart from one lancia i have owned nothing but peugeots. And they have all cost big money the older ones seem better made 205's 306's i have had are fine even my 406 3.0 V6 se was trouble free but my 2000 reg 406 hdi saloon as cost me sh*t loads since owning it i think i have spent close to £700 on the a/c. with a new ecu, condenser, varoius pipe work plus re gassing.

I bet your 205 Mi16 had awsome induction noise. And sell it back for 12K

you are very shrewd.

Is it easy to source carbs like that, I mean to get them matched to the engine for the right fueling etc. Did it still run fuel injectors?

Dont have the car but things i can remember where everything was pug motorsport parts bushes engine mounts etc it had a lot of 309 gti parts all 91 spec rear beam so it was longer negative camber all round. Cosworth internals No injection just carbs. Oh yes induction roar was glorious it would red line at 9000 rpm. Soon as you hit 4000rpm it was amazing Below that you would think it was just a standard mint pug. It would go off the clock top speed was 155mph and 0 to 60 was a fraction over 5 secs in the dry of course. I had a funny race with a volvo t5 estae he could not keep up that 6 speed box off the gti 6 was amazing. 110mph in 3rd and still 3 more gears to go. I did not want to sell it, ha came to mine on his motorbike and said he had sold the lancia and asked if i would sell it back to him i said yes for 12k joking he said ok i said i need to think about it a week later he came back and said heres the money 12k all in cash. So i sold it back. FOOL
