fuel

Post by muffindell »

OMG, I couldnt get 30 to the gallon if I tried! I can trash up and down the motorway all day long at 90mph and still return 47mpg. Are you sure you dont have a leak? Check your air filter isn't full of flies while you change the fuel filter and stick some Forte diesel cleaner thro the system, better still fill the fuel filter housing with it before you put the lid on (neat, it's perfectly safe and what the trade do to clean the injectors etc).

Mines a 2000 90hdi GLX and I get about 650-700 miles from a full tank. That’s 75% 60mph country roads and the rest round town.

I've been looking into Bio-diesel for a bit and I am still not confident to give it a go. From what I have found it has a different viscosity, being thicker and less 'runny' that regular diesel. This means it is harder for your fuel pump to pump it and your injectors to inject it. I have been told if can be overcome by heating the biodiesel prior to it entering the engine but it is a lot of sodding about. These concepts biodiesel vehicles being produced use regular diesel to start up then after 10 minutes or so the heat from the radiator is used to heat the biodiesel to a temperature that it flows as easily as regular diesel. All this sounds great to me but it is not exactly something I can do. I have been told by a few people with landrovers that it works fine straight in, no heating. I am not too keen to gamble my fuel pump and injectors though. It would be great to be-able to use it. You can make the stuff yourself for about 30p a litre (plus 27p Duty, which of course everyone would be happy to declare and pay!).

That’s my two cents anyways, hope it helps.

Thanks I'll get some diesel cleaner as well! The air filter is spotless - i think its new. Dont think I have a leak - not seen anything.

About bio diesel. Its correct that if you use straight vedgatable oil (SVO) that its thicker and in any case wont work in a modern high pressure direct injection diesel. However if you process the SVO by seperating out the Glycerol (you mix a catalist with it made from sodium hydroxide and methonol) then you are left with bio diesel which is better than mineral diesel from the pumps and the emmissions are extremly low. People report increased performance and better consumption.

However I need to sort out my 90 HDi so it performs normally first!! Thanks everybody for contributing to this thread since I now have a standard by which to measure mine against.

chip oil

Post by muffindell »

You can use used fish and chip oil in the Phase 1 406's (non HDi's), or get a 405, 309, 205,306; all these can be easily and cheaply converted to run on used veg oil (filtered of course, to get the odd missed chip or batter scratchings!). I remember a big thing about it a few years ago in Wale, with cars running around burning this stuff and with the exhaust fumes smelling like a chippy!
