405 OR 406 - peugeot fan but a 406 newby

Post by andythediver »

I currently have a 405 and a 406
The 405 is like s**t off a shovel- put it in 5th and there it stays- even on steep or drawn out hills. It has no mot, a juddering clutch and a knocking noise on the front nearside suspension started off only when changing direction [forward/reverse or voce versa] now every pot hole! And 189 k on the clock.

The 406 is a 2004 hdi90 and is luxurious inside and out all the bells and whistles - trouble is, its not what I would call "turbocharged" the other pug can be twice round the block while im accelerating to the first junction!! and I have to seriously increase throttle on hills or speed bleeds off very quickly have even found myself changing down on a 1 in 9 hill
is this normal?

Now the question
given the above performance, I tow a caravan do I sell the 406 and spend the cash on an aging 405 or do I sell the 405 and get the 406 looked at or is the performance a hdi issue? [have had Citroen xsara hdi and thought it was sh*te! driven a berlingo and cant even sustain 70 coming up the M5 at Bromsgrove towards m42]] - will the 406 pull my 900Kilo caravan

Next question i have never driven a car with an oil temp gauge and a water temp gauge - knowing how the temperature soars when I’m pulling a caravan up hills on the A30 Cornwall bound, which temperature gauge should I watch and what is the highest temperature that you should allow the oil / water to reach?
On the 405 I used to "rest" the car if water temp topped 105 [hills] on the flat it towed at 85/90 normal temp [not towing] 75/80
What should I expect from the 406?

Sorry to be so long winded but this is a difficult decision for me as the 406 was inherited from my dad who passed away recently - so the decision I make is very difficult for me.

Can't really think at this time of night, but just one question. What 405 is it?

the 406 is a much comfier car but the 405 will cost peanuts to fix when it goes wrong. as for your performance issue the 405 td puts out 92bhp ( when new ) and i think is about 1/4 of a ton lighter than your 406 which is only putting out 90bhp  . if it was my choice tho id sell the 405 or hope someone burns it out for the insurance mnoney ( not that i condone anything like that :cheesy: ) and spend the money giving the 406 a remap for more power 8)

I would definately keep the more modern 406.

Your old 405 will always be just that, clonks or no clonks :|

A power increase to 125BHP will transform your HDi magically and with no detrement to economy. In fact the 90BHP version is simpler and less troublesome than the 110BHP so your already onto a winner.

A proper remap power increase will cost around £300.00 there are various outlets around the country or even mobile companies. You could ask on here for recommendations as a few on here have done it.

Oil and Water temps go hand in hand at higher temperatures but keep an eye on the water. I can't say I've seen a HDi with an Oil 'temperature' gauge though?

A HDi engine runs pretty cool temps really and is difficult to overheat so Towing should not be an issue.

cheers Welton re :-Oil and Water temps go hand in hand at higher temperatures but keep an eye on the water. I can't say I've seen a HDi with an Oil 'temperature' gauge though?

my dad's car has 2 handbooks : depending on which you have, check out page 117 , item number33 or 124 item 33

having driven the car, at speed, the oil temp is about 110 the water 90
gently round suburbs both at 90 this is quite high compared with my 405 is this normal?

Oil and water seem fine. 90 Is what my car now seems to stay on most of the time for water and 110C for oil is a little hotter than my old petrol volvo used to get in normal use but that would reach 115C if I was gunning it so that sounds fine too.

Oil will be around 100 - 110 on the motorway and this is normal. As I said earlier you would have a real job making a HDi overheat the water, they are very efficient.

I would disagree. I would never have another 406 coupe 3.0 V6 SE yes i agree styling to die for. Goregeous sounding V6 :cheesy: Very nice with full leaather jbl hifi etc....... But handling what a let down for a car that cost nearly 30k  When i test drove there was no country lanes when i drove it home nearly put in a hedge its far to heavy a car peugeot should of put far better suspension on the car. Instead you have a motorway cruiser nothing more. My standard 406 saloon can go around bends 15 to 20mph more than my coupe ever could and still feel composed instead of boat like handling. I would say its the worst handling pug i have owned. Having owned 15 pugs its the only one that did not make me smile when cornering I.M.OA

Don't know what you drove but all I can say is my coupe is standard and would piss all over my salloon round corners, having said that it was never built as a sports car it was always designed and intended as a Grand Tourer.

I did not just drive it i owned it for 3 years from new peugeot 406 coupe 3.0 V6 SE. Yes it is a grand tourer not a sports car. But why does my 406 hdi saloon handle far better this is classed as a family car. Not A gt or sports car. Really wish i had brouhgt the bmw 330ci club sport same money apart from the bmw would be second hand. And still be worth a lot more to sell on. Styling alone the peugeot is better looking than the bmw but thats it.
