do you get a nasty annoying vibration arround 2200rpm?
Not really a vibration, it's more of a muted grinding kind of sound.

I've had a bit more of a play and:

Happens pulling away in 1st at over about 1500rpm, increasing with throttle
Doesn't happen pulling away in 1st under about 1500rpm (even under full throttle)
Doesn't happen pulling away in 2nd/3rd under any amount of throttle
Happens in 1st and 2nd accelerating from 2000-4000rpm. The harder the acceleration the nastier the grinding. Can't really hear in 3rd and above.

I don't have access to anyone I'd consider capable of controlling a car, so I'll give the engine a rocking by hand and see if it seems excessively loose (handy being a big bloke!). I know where the mount preventing easy access to the cambelt area is, but where are the others? Damn turbo with bits of pipe and crap blocking visibility...

All the time remembering just which car you're standing in front of...

If you've got no one you trust, may I suggest also jacking the engine up, via a lump of wood under the sump? Unless you really are that big!

I don't know anyone locally that has the co-ordination to operate a car's pedals, so i'm on my own here. An engine's only a couple hundred kilos so it ain't difficult for someone like me (who is able to discover if bathroom scales can actually weigh as much as they claim!) to move about. I guess if I push/pull/lever it in a few directions with a cold idling engine I might be able to recreate the noise too...
