Smoke and a tapping

Post by sollyboy »

Hi puglover
Have a few problems with the old hdi pug, its getting on a bit now with 145,000 on the clock. I know that the hdi engines are a bit rattley and tappey as modern diesels engine go, but I think the tapping I'm getting out of mine is a problem with the top end , cam & followers etc ? Just started a new job doing 120 miles a day mostly on the motorway, early start late home at night always driving in the dark , was surprised how much smoke was coming out the back on any acceleration on the pedal, highlighted when the car behind lights are shining through the haze of smoke coming from the exhaust. Just had a oil change, oil and air filters, and used some fuel additive , but still I think excessive smoke for a diesel, fuel consumption seems ok, haven't changed the fuel filter ! Any ideas to the problem of smoke and tapping.
All the best puglover

I wouldn't worry too much, a lot of "smoke" seams to be common. Few people have posted about it recently.

HDI's can be tappy.

Unless the fuel economy drops or it start running ruff i wouldn't worry. If you are worried the then you take it to garage for a smoke test and check whether it is really a problem or not.
