Speedometer - could be a couple of things. Search around the forums for the transducer prolem on the D8. It may help.
The other one with the rev counter, could be dry joints on the circuit board. This may also affect the speedo, again a bit of searching may help there.
Have a look at some of the MOT comments from the diesel guys, they tend to put injector cleaner in to improve things. It may help.
Good luck getting things sorted.

Remember - it only takes a few inches of water to drown a 406 don't make the same mistake I made! The V6 Exec is no more.

The speedo thing is very common on the 2,1, mine was the control box behind the glovebox.
Rev counter with rough running? Hmm, sounds like something to do with the ECU I'm afraid. You could look at the connector and maybe try re-seating it (undo it, then put it back).

Good point but ...steve_earwig wrote: Hmm, sounds like something to do with the ECU I'm afraid.
I discounted the ECU and its fixity because of the comment by Shaun. However you might be on to something there. It could be worth looking at the loom and connectors to see if the problem lies there.shaun406 wrote:ive tried a new ecu, pump what else is there
I think there was something on one of the threads about the diesel vibrations working away at the loom/connectors.

D'oh! >slaps forehead< Apologies for not reading the post properly, maybe I shouldn't watch tv at the same time... I'd still have squint at the connector, it seems a common point (I wonder if the actual connectors can push out the back of the connector block like a cheap scart lead).
Is there a relationship between the cutting out/revving and the mad rev counter?
Failing that, and any more useful suggestions, and before you bung even more money at the problem, I'm afraid you need to get some proper diagnostics done. Not Peugeot!

the 2.1 can be a bitch to diagnose, i would check the coolant sensor and also clean the engine speed sensor

Re: p reg 406 2.1 td glx running rough
sorted the running problem the engine man light wasnt working (sumone took it out) and had new pump checked and it runns perfect now aswell due to timming and rev counter it was the front half of the clocks so still got the right speedo reading so its just the speedo so its the gearbox sender or the black box by the glove box what does it look like and how many plugs cheers

Erm, black (I think), just bigger than a fag packet with one plug.
