You may as well fit new shocks while your there thou, i think there about the same price as the springs. Probably less hassle too.

Cheers will be looking into that. I need to get it sorted fast, so may need to pay over the odds on the high-street.

Will also need to get it fitted as I just don't have the space or tools for this job

Just been down to SlickFit - they are quoting £85/side so £170 for the pair. But will need to get the car down to them next year.

Sounds reasonable to me, but will get other quotes when they are open.

Just had a look through all my receipts and because mine has had some in its past.

Had one fitted 07/04/2005 cost £32.46
Then had one fitted 22/04/2005 cost 32.46.

Looks like it previous owner had a bad April

Lets just hope your other one holds out a little longer.

Was the £32.46 for the spring fitted, or supply only?

A long time ago (16 years!!!) I attended one of the top enginering colleges in the UK, whilst there I learned a lot about this.

Looking at the photos the amount of "dull" metal compared to bright (brittle fracture) indicates that this has been on the way out for some time. No point risking a failure of the other side, plus I would prefer both springs to be of the same rate and size so will do both sides. Seems like a false economy to do just the one.

Going to get a few more quotes first before I commit.

im betting if the coil spring has failed like that, the top mount will probably need doing as well. the bearings fell to bits on my dads when his coil spring went like that last year.

The coil failed overnight, so the car has hardly moved since.

When it failed I would have expected the damper to cushion the impact so would not expect any damage beyond the spring. Without the spring the dynamic loads on the bearings would be a bit high and would tend to destroy them. I will either trailer the car to be fixed or do a temp fix on the spring.

Will see how it goes.

Thats the part price only. The previous owner had other work done at the same time.
