Cam belt change cost for 2.1 TD (1998)
Now so deeply in love with my 406 (after 3 days and 830 miles) I can't bear the thought of losing her to a snapped rubber band. Could I seek the advice of more experienced owners than me as to what a fair price might be and whether anyone could recommend a Peugeot savvy garage in the MK43 (North Beds) area?

Re: Cam belt change cost for 2.1 TD (1998)
About 4 years ago, I paid £130 to have the belt changed on my old 2.1TD. I think it may have cost a bit more normally because when I went to pick it up, the mechanic said it was much more dificult than he'd expected. Expect £150 - £200 I would think.

Is that including delivery and 22.5% tax?
I used to complain about the price of car parts in the UK, it looks like heaven to me now

While we're here, I can't help thinking my D8 would sell a lot easier with a new cam belt (stuff the water pump), how much of a pig is it to DIY? I've done things like Ashtrays and a Transhit but Haynes makes it look really complicated.

Re: Cam belt change cost for 2.1 TD (1998)
Thanks for the feedback one and all. Why would you run the water pump off the cam belt? Makes no sense to me. Thanks for the advice though, makes sense to change anything with a bearing in there whilst it's all apart.
I'll start a ring round tomorrow. First week now complete and we've been to Pinner, Loughborough, Cardiff, Sevenoaks, Colchester, and Chingford together, starting point being Northampton.
First impressions? Boot so huge it males my collection of tools look silly, they're all poked down the back with acres of room in front. She's just fantastic on the motorway, nearest thing to silent between fifty and ninety. Feels solid as a rock as well, even in all the nasty sidewinds we've been blessed with this week. Last Peugeot I owned was an F reg 309 GTI from brand new, and you were always aware that the doors were skinned with bacofoil. She's fantastic on fuel too, even though the engine feels really powerful (as long as you keep the revs reasonably high). If anything just a bit too comfortable, especially on an early start with the heating set just right.
Without doubt the best estate I've ever owned, in a different league to my Mondeo, and far more economical and comfortable than my Volvo estate was. And no worries about rust creeping up on me, unlike the other two. Shame about the hideous beige upholstery.

Never done a 2.1 but if it's anything like the 1.9TD or 2.0HDI easy-peasy with the right tools, just time thats the prob.steve_earwig wrote:While we're here, I can't help thinking my D8 would sell a lot easier with a new cam belt (stuff the water pump), how much of a pig is it to DIY? All cambelt cars are like that. The water pump is down near the crankshaft pulley so it's driven by the cambelt. It has the handy effect of running faster and slower to suit engine revs too!bloodncustard wrote:Why would you run the water pump off the cam belt? Makes no sense to me
Stevey - ask mjb about DIY belt changes

Re: Cam belt change cost for 2.1 TD (1998)
My dad's just had his 2.1 done by Peugeot.
Cam belt kit,( adjuster and pulley) aux belt and water pump just under £600.
I did my 2.1 myself,including water pump,parts came to about £60.
They do after market pumps, they are just the impellor side, not the whole thing that Peugeot sells.
