Changing Gear Box Oil?

Post by nipper76 »

hey peeps... just one of those things i thought best be done...

have a 2.1td R reg

just wondered how to go about changing / refilling the oil change in the gear box??

do you get any "flushes" to use first, or is it drain and refill??

any extra lubricants you can get for it?? as i noticed you can by a special fluid you add to your normall oil on a change to make it work better,

many thanks

dan

I think the flushing thing is optional, although I'm not sure what you'd use. I have a feeling it's mostly autoboxes they do that to but if you have concerns then change the oil, run it for a few thousand, then change it again. I'm not keen on oil additives, I always remember that stuff that coats the inside of your engine/gearbox with ptfe, just the thing if you're planning on running it with no oil in, useless if you're not.

I've not done one of these boxes myself (was done with the clutch :cheesy: ) but Haynes Book of Lies says you may need a square section wrench. HBoL says the drain is on the final drive casing and the filler/level plug is on the rear face of the differential housing (final drive = differential  ) Undo the filler/level plug when you drain it to let air in. You'll need 1.9 (i.e. 2) litres of finest 75W80 gear oil in those little plastic bottles with the long clear flexible necks, the idea is you fill it 'til the oil starts running out the filler/level plug again, so go easy when the second bottle is nearing empty. Easier to drain if the box is hot of course. Happy grovelling!
