Rattling sound (Crank pulley)

Post by Carpman »

Got a weird problem. When I start the car from cold I get a rattling noise seems to be coming from underneath drivers side under my feet, and is worse when the clutch is at biting point or when I am just pulling away.

Now the funny thing is when the engine has warmed up the rattle will dissapear, I did take it to the garage but of course by the time I got there the engine was warm and no noises!

Any pointers will be most welcome.

Crankshaft pulley would be first on the list.

Right I just checked with Peugeot main dealer and they have changed the part, it now comes as a set including timing pinion, camshaft gear, and camshaft seal and something else I didn't write down all for £111.17 I have the 2l petrol model.

I checked in the Haynes manual and just replacing the pulley looked quite straight forward, but with all these other bits now im not sure, I don't want to take it to a garage unless I really have to, any advice on this?

Of course I will need to jack up the car, get the wheel and plastic wheel arch off first, to confirm the noise is coming from here, but it does sound fav at the mo judging by the number of posts about this on the internet.

I edited the title a little just in case future searches might find it helpful if the pulley is at fault.

I had my pulley changed last year - it starts out as a ticking noise when cold and ends up (quite quickly) as a full on metallic rattling/clattering which rises and falls with the revs and is so loud you daren't (and shouldn't) drive the thing. Honestly when it nears the end it makes an awful sound, you can't miss it

Look for a brown coloured dust around the pulley area and possibly bits of shiney metal thin strips - a sign that all is not well down there.

Thanks for the info m8, mine is just starting and can only be heard when the engine is cold and you engage gear like when you pull away. Now having reread the haynes manual and thinking about what the peugeot dealer told me I wonder if they misunderstood what part it is, because it seems I just need to remove the aux belt, and then undo the 4 bolts holding the crank pulley to the crank and replace the duff pulley.

The dealer told me I need new camshaft seals, but this entails removing the cam belt and so! I think there was a misunderstanding, I will go into the dealer and point at the part I think.
