Bottom Rad Hose NIGHTMARE!

Post by Tiny Tim »

Righty... in a nutshell, mine popped off a couple of weeks back after a long drive from Hertfordshire back to Bournemouth. Myself and a friend had trouble re-fitting the bugger after I fitted my new rad a few months back but it seemed to be holding.

The hose popped off as I was sitting in traffic and the car got very hot.

I had MASSIVE trouble getting the bugger back on due to a stretched O-ring. 2 1/2 hours later I was on my way again after 'adapting' one of Durex's FINEST to get me home!

Im going to order a couple of new O-rings today, but I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem? It just seems no matter how well in place the hose seems to be, the clip just inst keeping it there and with a light tug the hose can be pulled off.

Do you mean the conrad fitting on the rad self? It should be a devil of a job to pull it out! You've got the O-rings which make the seal and that springy clip that keeps it in place. I'd be prepared to change your bottom hose!
Nice one with the rubbers by the way! :cheesy:

Thats the puppy. To be fair, it doesnt look too bad, its not overly corroded.. I think its just the small 'tags' on the bottom that get held in place by the clip itself.

From what I can see it comes as part of the metal bracket/pipe thats bolted to the inner wing/chassis.. is that right?

Yep, that's the one. And it's a right bastard to get off too
Long nosed mole grips highly recommended to hold open hose clamp on engine while you lever the hose off!!!! You will swear a lot

Still... i've never been so releived not to get any during the course of a weekend :cheesy:

Think im going to have a play with the clips and see if I can get it to hold in place. Im off to buy the new O-ring today... just hope I can get the damn thing back on!

I had the same problem on my 1.9 TD 306, after much faffing about with the clip and the O ring, i just went to the main stealers and got a new pipe. took the old one off showing little to no mercy and installed the new one.

Just changed the bottom hose along with the rad on my D9 110HDI. The new hose was £16 from the stealer, which I thought was better than buggering aroung and it going wrong at the worse moment. Having seen how it fits together, I think it was £16 well spent.

If it's only 16 squids for a new'un then it's not worth the grief trying to get the knackered old one back on. If... Best check service box in case yours is gold plated.

i had the same problem on my 406 1.9td after i changed the radiator.

i bodged it tho :cheesy:

the push in connector was corroded beyond use and i disnt have the cash to buy a new pipe.

so i set about making something to fit.

a trip to a scrap yard later i have half a pipe from a 306 for free.

Then off to work i go and measure the internal diameter of the pipe and raid the scrap exhaust container and a bit of pipe from a real mini fits a treat so after hacking it to size and steam cleaning it. I then jubilee clipped it to the old bit of pipe then connected it and its been fine ever since.

its lasted 5,000 miles so far 8)

I did exactly the same Rob but I used some 32mm waste pipe. Not the best of bodges on my part, I should have found some metal tube of the right diameter as you did
Needless to say it lasted about 1000 miles and started pissing out from one side so I bit the bullet and replaced it. £40 for a hose after haggling
