Short answer: put in 3rd, stand on the brakes and let out the clutch slowly to stall it, then disconnect the battery.

Hope that helped, I've no idea how to cut the fuel off properly but that should do the trick.

Just hope the key turns to start it again. It sounds like the steering lock's self-destructed.

I've not much idea about the ignition locks on these, I'm sure someone with a better idea will be along soon. I hope you've got two keys so you can lock it anyway. You could try wiggling the key about I suppose but that might result in the steering lock being engaged and you not being able to do anything with it...

hi saffy what steve just said is right , try turning the key past where
it is as if you were starting the car while wiggling it gently, also try turning
and wiggling the key while at the same time slightly rocking the steering
wheel from side to side

Phew! Tried & tried wigglin & jigglin, took the steering rack console off, barrell seemed a bit loose a screw was half hanging out so back in it went - thought that's the problem but still no joy, mean time with it getting dusky and all, thought boolllox  I'll get some one to look at it tomorrow, cursing and swearing at the prospect of buying a new ignition key & barrell, put the console back on & had one more wiggle for the sake of it ....bingo! out it came! :cheesy: It happened why & what for I don't know, so I am concerned however, even though it seems to go in turn & out that it will happen again, what do you guys suggest I can do? - How much is it going to cost!

I have had to recently price an ignition barrel for my 406 , between £125/150
depending on you having the key number ,usually found on plastic tag on key
or on a card in owners handbook wallet. Not that hard a job to replace :) :)

It depends what's happened, maybe you could try lubricating the lock, perhaps some WD but the right thing for locks is graphite powder - got some sandpaper and a couple of pencils? I have a feeling it's a bit more terminal than that though, sorry.

Get some lube in the key hole quick and whilst the battery is off give the ignition set a good work out and more lubing etc - a good silicone based spray with a straw outlet will be nice.

Get rid of the 406 and buy something decent, it will let you down big style in the end when you need it most.
