HDi Throttle Response - laggy lift off

The throttle response seems a bit odd on my 406 HDI. It's a 2003 car, 110 with 95k. It's got the usual diesel lack of throttle response when you plant your foot, which is fine, but when you lift off for a gear change, the throttle response will lag a fair bit, meaning that if I'm cracking on a bit the clutch will already be in and the revs will flare up during the gearchange, maybe by a hundred revs or so. It's as if I'm hanging onto the throttle pedal for a fraction too long before pressing the clutch.

Is this just a characteristic of the HDis? Some sort of pollution control perhaps (EGR)?

Hi,

A bit of throttle lag is pretty normal for all diesels, cause they don't have a throttle butterfly as such.

The sort of lag you're describing doesn't sound too bad either and you generally get accustomed to coming off the accelerator pedal a touch before declutching.

I had an exagerated lag on my 2.1TD where it would rev up to about 2000rpm when I declutched, but that turned out to be the ECU trying to compensate for a faulty coolant sensor.

Clearing the fault code fixed the problem and replacing the sensor prevented a re-occurence.
