Dturbo 1.9 whistling

Post by procta »

my dads car is whistling like mad the turbo spools up ok. the whistle tends to go when you hit a certain speed. we have had a rag over the exaust and it whistles like mad. it sounds like its coming from the turbo area, what could be the fault?

presuming it didn't do it before and it's a loud whistle, i'd guess at an air leak. Get a smoker to blow some smoke round the area under strong light and have a look. Ghetto diagnostics man :)
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

when we hold the rag over the exaust we can smell the fumes from the exaust coming up from behind the engine. if its an air leak how can this be corrected?

My money's on the flexible joint on the down pipe from the manifold.

You'll have to crawl under the thing and look up from behind the engine. I'm thinking you will see a dirty great hole in the flexi. Cost wise I don't know but run it down to an exhaust place for an idea?

Actually I'm assuming it's got a flexi? most have
