My Service Indicator's Lying!

Post by DaiRees »

I'm trying to be a good boy, really I am

The service interval for my petrol pug is 20000 miles or 2 years, whichever comes first, but I like to do an oil & filter change and give her a good check over in between at 10k or 1 year. The service indicator (miles 'til next service that come up on the odo when you turn the ignition on) currently says 10100, so I was getting psyched to do an interim service in the next week or 2. Then I though about it and realised that it can't be due yet...... so I dug out the records :?

I last serviced the car on 13th October '07 at 41728 miles, so that's only 8.5 months ago. Since then it's done a mere 7266 miles :? So why is the bloody thing indicating that it's done 9.9k or been a year   .

The next full service will be the timing belt one, so that'll be quite expensive, I'd rather that be done on schedule, not earlier than necessary. But if the service indicator keeps lying like this it'll be "due" 5.5K early   .

Traditionally I've always done quite low miles (6-8K pa), so was servicing based on time, this is only happening since I've changed jobs and upped my mileage, so I'm now meeting the mileage criteria before the time criteria (only just though :cheesy: ) :?

Is this the faschist french BAStuds programming their cars to empty our wallets again, or is there a legitimate reason for it?

Some of the service meters are based on the amount of engine revolutions! Not too sure how the D9 works but I read somewhere that the 607 operates on this principle!

20,000 miles! That do seem a very long way between services, even if it's not a diesel and doesn't fill the oil full of crap... If you're halving that for oil & filter changes then I wouldn't worry what the service indicator says, not so sure on the belt as Haynes (BoL) says half the recommendation if you do lots of stop-start driving (delivery van?)

edit: bluddy keyboard :x

I noticed mine lies a bit about the mileage and seems to count-down in 50's :o

Also - come 12months time it automatically zero's the whole lot anyway i.e. time for an oil change.
