Noticed a ticking sound coming from the drivers side of the engine recently. Seems to change speed with revs. Noticed quite a few of you with the smaller Hdi engines have had issues with the bottom pulley. Anyone seen this on a 2.2? Has all the signs including the ticking sound and what appears to be very fine metal flakes on the side of the engine. The tensioner also looks a little shiny although I think I have caught this before it gets too bad.
So how hard is this to change? Can I get a pulley from somewhere other than pug (£204 !!!!! from servicebox).
Hi
I think the 2.2 is the same as the 1995cc D9 in which case the bottom pulley is prone to rattle because it has a lot of work to do on this mighty engine, you can tell when it releases a brown dust - it's easy to change and costs about £70 from Andrew Page motor factors. Take the o/s wheel off, remove the splash guards and belt covers then you can get at it. slip the belt off by turning the tensioner to get the pressure off. draw the pulley off after removing the bolt of course. Refit in reverse order.
Had a good poke about today and could see wear to the tensioner and a very slight wobble in the belt. It was difficult to see it this was caused by the pulley however. The noise is at its worst about 3000rmp and somtimes you can notice a snag in the belt if you watch closley. I will try and keep the revs and the miles down but its a 60 mile round trip for me to work so I have my fingers and toes crossed it will last until I change it.
Phoned GSF to get the bits and they can do the tensioner and belt but not the pulley. They believe its a dealer only part and the ones they have are only for the smaller Hdi's. Will try a few more places tomorrow. Don't fancy paying £205 from pug !!
Tried more places today and was told many times that is a dealer only part Phoned pug and they said that they had it in stock and it was the £204 that servicebox had quoted me.
So it looks like I will need to bite the bullet and pay the money.
On top of this I got my tensioner and belt from GSF delivered today. In the tensioner box was a set of brake pads??? Will get on to them about that tomorrow.
Hi
Maybe the 2.2 pulley is a bit beefier than the 2000HDI since they did need changing quite often - did you try www.andrewpage.com where I got mine from? Since they started fitting Dual Mass flywheels to smooth out the torsional oscillations at that end the other end of the crank needed some damping big time too and wow it drives the alternator, air con pump etc. - there is so much punch on a small crankshaft I always wonder why it don't break.
I did try there and like all the places I phoned I was told it was a pug only part So I bit the bullet and bought it before it went bang. Have added a How to for anyone who has to do this in future.
Hi Jim, mine started the ticking, just after I bought the car (a 2.2HDi) 2 years ago. At the time, I paid £140, including fitting. The part was from Peugeot, but the garage wasn't a main dealer.
As it's 2 years on now, I would have thought you'd be looking at about £160 ish now, but it could well be that Peugeot have shot the prices up.
