On my D8 there's a very obvious single wire just above the compressor with a connector on it, that'll be what you're after.

Had a full examination today and never even had to take auxiliary belt off as as soon as I had the wheelarch liner off it was clear the compressor was the cause of the rattle. It was rattling it's tits off and was getting quite warm, I disconnected the wiring to the compressor and surprise surprise the climate control is now not blowing. My question is what can I do about this (counting out the ridiculous cost of a reconditoned compressor), would it be possible to bypass it with a non-ac belt?

Possibly, but looking in Haynes the tensioning's done differently: on yours there's an eccentric pulley and on the non-a/c one it's done with some sort of plate. Might be worth getting the belt and seeing if it can be done with the eccentric one, before you go raiding the breakers. Looks like you'll have to miss out the jockey wheel above the crank pulley too.

Is there 40 different kinds of air con compressor in these 406's, or just the one main generic one regardless of if it's a petrol or diesel model.

the noise ur describing and where its coming from reminds me of a problem i had on a few pug 1,9 td's . the bottom crank pulley had a habit of shearing the woodruff key out of the crank and damaging the crank and the noise was from the pulley wobbling about  . it happened on 2 of my 405 1.9 turbo diesels and my fathers 306 1.9 td and i read of it happening to a few other people online :? . the only fix was a new engine cos the end of the crank was too damaged to hold the timing pulley on correctly . i noticed yours is a 1996 model so perhaps they used the remaining 405 engines in the early d8's and thats the ones i come across the faults with

No it's definately the compressor, the plastic bearing has started to come out helping to make it so noisy.

Will the tensioner and independent pulley off a petrol coupe model fit my model? The car I'm trying to get this off has the same compressor as mine!
