engine noise

Post by woodman »

I have a 1998 406 gl 1.8 petrol it has done 106000 miles. it has now an engine noise from the cambelt end the noise sounds like a new cars gearbox whine on tickover, when revved to pull away the noise increses to include a sound like a dry bearing. I have replaced the cambelt and neccessary parts some months ago but the noise has only been around for about a month. I have since replaced the water pump and checked the power steering pump and alternater pulleys.
Any ideas?

Have you changed the auxiliary drive belt idler (if fitted) and tensioner as well?
You could try running it with the aux. drive belt off to see if the noise goes.
It's not unheard of for the timing belt to rub on the cover.

Totally agree, mine's doing the same thing. I've got a replacement idler & belt to fit when I get a chance!
