406 LX diesel 1997
Hi
New to the site so hi to all.
Just got a 406 LX estate as a temporary car and was appalled by the sluggish acceleration. It's borderline dangerous.
Question is does this vehicle have a Mass Air Flow meter and if so where is it, quick look under thebonnet revealed nothing like a MAF to be seen.
Cheers
Allan

What engine?
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang
Re: 406 LX diesel 1997
Hi
It appears to be the 1.9 N/A engine although I swear I can hear a faint hint of a turbo spooling if I drive with the windows open.

Most modern engines have a Mass air flow sensor - usually fitted just after the air filter identified by a plug going into the hose and confirmed by looking inside for a sensitive wire that should be free of dirt. Cleaned by spraying carb cleaner over it not a wire brush. Turbos can be found attached to the exhaust manifold
with a hose leading to the inlet manifold and one to the air filter.

Ok.
1.9 Turbo engine, appears to be the 90bhp version which makes the performance even more horrendous.
Does anyone have a part number for the MAF?

Ok, had a good look over this for the first time today and for the life of me I cannot find a MAF sensor on there anywhere.
It's definately the 1.9 turbo engine so I would expect it to have one somewhere.
If anyone knows the whereabouts of the MAF on this engine can they let me know

Re: 406 LX diesel 1997
True it appears to be devoid of a MAF. Makes me wonder just how awful this engine is.
So today I'll be checking that full depression of the accelerator is in fact full throttle. You'd be surprised at how many V8's I've checked over and found that full accelrator depression only gives 1/2 throttle.
Also going to check for splits in the boost pipes.
Any further suggestions for things to check would be appreciated.
Cheers

Re: 406 LX diesel 1997
Have you looked at the turbo yet?
Is the wastegate opening? Is the vacuum pipe connected to the diaphragm that controls the wastegate connected, is it stuck?
Take off the turbo pipe and check that the turbo is actually spinning.
No MAF fitted on that engine.
Hold your hand over the exhaust with aq rag and see if it will get forced off, if not, maybe a blocked cat/exhaust.
Stuck on brakes?

Re: 406 LX diesel 1997
As it's new to you check the fuel filter, many of the 1.9td's get run on veg oil (no convertion needed) and in this weather are lightly to block the filter, it's also worth checking the in tank strainer as If ether is blocked you may well be pulling air into the filter housing causing loss of power and will probably not rev above 3000 rpm if it's badly blocked.
I speak with personal exspereance with this one having done about 11,000m on veg in my 405td.

Cheers for the replies.
Is the tank strainer accessible from inside the vehicle or only from outside?

Re: 406 LX diesel 1997
It would be easiest to get a new diesel filter, then open up the filter housing to see if there is any gunge in there, then replace the filter, fitting some injection cleaner, neat, direct into the filter housing, bleed it up and run it.
