right, peugeot have come back with the result...........
the inner skin of the manifold is breaking up causing it to get very hot as its not dispelling hot air as fast as it can which in turn has burnt up my cat and as the cat's not working it wont pass its next mot - which is in may
so, not wanting to pay the £1,100 they quoted me, i bought the new manifold from them for £120 and have a replacement cat from buypartsby on ebat for £100 delivered. still not overly impressed but its better than the alternative.

Result? Funny that, peugeot told me that the message was a common problem with all models and was solved by replacing the water temperature sensor. You think they would tow the peugeot line!

Sorry but I don't get that. If hot exhaust gas is expelled from the exhaust ports then who cares about how thick or thin the exhaust manfold is? it can't get any hotter once it's left the head
I can understand *bits* flying off the inside of the manifold and hitting the CAT or fuel being dumped and burning the CAT out but can't see how this would flag an antipolution message (maybe the Oxygen sensor has burnt away?).
Cars in my care:
2021 Kia Spottage 1.6 Pez Turbo Dual Clutch Gearbox Trickery
2013 Renner Twingo - donkey work
from what i understand it isnt to do with how thick/thin it is just that the inner layer is breaking up, but i see what your saying about the heat - im not mechanic and my understanding was getting a bit fuzzy at that point but they did mention both of your other points about unburnt fuel burning up the cat and that on rev'ing there is a tinkering coming from the cat with all the bits flying round in it.
the antipollution was isolated to a bad air/fuel mix caused by unburnt fuel in the exhaust, both oxygen sensors were removed and tested as working so was put down to the cat and manifold.... but then it was clear the guy on the phone was reading from a sheet and kept having to check with the guy that did the test but the end diag was that both parts needed to be replaced but i guess i wont be able to tell till they get taken off.
right, well got the car back and although neither i or the mechanic could see any problems with the existing cat or manifold decided what the heck and put them on anyway and.............. no more antipollution fault
