It seems it's related to the auto transmission?

Thought pug auto boxes used torque converters instead of clutches?

I can't begin to imagine what this would be. The clutch pedal switch (only installed for the cruise control) is wired in series with the brake pedal switch (cruise control switch, not the brake light one) and just goes to the cruise control ECU although that is linked to the BSI which is of course connected to the ECU...

The rest of the clutch system is purely hydraulic OOH WAIT

Does the aircon turn on and off properly?

Could be the clutch actuator (solenoid) on the compressor which engages the drive from the aux belt pulley!

Try clearing the code then see if it comes back.

If you get the car nice and warm then drop the temperature control to 14c, you should notice a stutter in the revs about half a second after you press the a/c button to turn it on and off. With the bonnet open you may also hear the compressor kicking in when the engine stutters

Also congratulations, you've hit the 5 post mark so you don't need a mod to approve them now - why don't you say hello in the welcome forum? :)
