Clutch cable :(

Hi there. Ive just changed my clutch cable as my old one as garage said that was my cars problem for clutch slipping only now after changing my cable for this new one its slipping more than ever in 3rd,4th,5th????. what i need to know is... is this normal as it needs to stretch a bit?? or is it another garage job

It'll slip if the cable's too tight, not too slack. I'm afraid to say you're probably in need of a new clutch

. yeah the cable was really tight to get on. had to sort of manually derpress the clutch with a screwdriver to get it on. and theres no slack anymore. no play in the pedal. i was really hoping you wasnt gonna say that . Thanks for that mjb. *psst anyone wanna buy a 406 *

Isn't there an automatic adjuster on the cable clutches? Did you back it off?

Hmm it should be tensioned, but if the cable's excessively tight I'm not sure. Does the automatic adjuster need resetting or something? (I've only driven 406s with hydraulic clutches)

Does anyone know if a reasonable test of the clutch would be to chock the car (or park it against a brick wall?), put the handbrake on, put it in 5th and crank the starter with the clutch cable disconnected? If my theory (and that's all it is) holds, then if the starter turns then the clutch is slipping else it'd be the cable

yeah there was a green piece you take off once everythings connected and i did but it didnt seem to adjust :S

hey, just wondering. ive taken the decision to replace the clutch and keep the car instead of selling it and loosing a really good car again. anyway what i need to know is, How much roughly am i looking at to get the clutch and cable done?

Well the kit itself is fairly cheap - Remember, you want to replace the clutch plate, machine the flywheel, thrust bearing (cause its all out and the car is 10 years old) etc etc - It's the labour which is the killer if you take it to a garage!

Cable - Maybe another hours labour?

Remember, sometimes the lower engine mounts may be shagged - Another item which is cheaper doing whilst everything is apart than later on down the track!

Right. Phoned garage up and they quoted me £479 to have everything done. Clutch kit, cable, gearbox oil and the labour. This includes everything to do be done that invloves the clutch (flywheel, bearings, Etc)... and is being done thursday so got tractor from work as transport LOL! . So happy to finally get it done tho. gonna be like a new car:P

Converting that into AUD - thats pretty alright! Makes everything feel rather good when its all done. Watch the shift quality with the new gearbox oil - It transforms the car!

Good tip in winter and the colder months - Makes it smoother when the oil hasn't warmed up yet1

Might be worth fitting a new main crank oil seal 'whilst they're down there'

lol. cant actaully wait to get the car back now tbh and has only gone in tonight . being done thursday and should have it back that night . I'll have a word with them about the crank oil seal and see how much it'll cost tbh tho it shouldnt cost much i wouldnt of thought?

YAYYYYY!! got my car back tonight and is like a new car !. asked to keep my old clutch to look at and hadnt only worn down to the rivets... id worn the actually rivets down LOL!.

thanks man. cant belive the amount of difference in the car tho after. Well worth the money.. .which reminds me.. charged me £424 for the lot.
