Cam belt change

Post by johnd »

Got the car booked in for the cam belt change tomorrow the kit has cost me £125 just the labour on top been told about 3hrs to get it done.
I have been putting it off because i was going to chop the pug in for something else but there is nothing out there that i really fancy and the millage is slowly creeping up on mine and it is 10 yrs old.
Plus the rear shocks are ready for changing noticed abit of weeping and the engine is knocking when i put my foot down so i think the engine mounts are on there way out but still I cant grumble since i have had the car not spent any serious money on it just the MOT and service.
So we will see what the final bill is tomorrow and start pricing the other bits up and I may have ago at changing them myself.

£125  sounds a bit steep mate, where did you get it from (got to be a main stealer at that price) and what engine is it ?
Next time try www.gsfcarparts.com for your parts, rear shock's £35.90 + vat each

Crikey - £125.00 is well over, it's only a belt and a couple of idlers.....£50.00 tops I would say.

Oh - and you'd be well advised to change the water pump whilst they're down there!!

Got the car back about 1 hr ago they have changed the cam belt and the water pump total bill came to £220 must have miss heard him when he told me the price last week was expecting more. Better than peugeot dealer they said £365 and they would have the car for the full day.

That's all good then. £220.00 is fair.

Thats what I paid almost 3 1/2 years ago (2L HDI 110) so it's not a bad price at all.

Sounds similar to my Hdi 110 - purchased the car of the owners son in law (the guy had recently passed away), and it came with service history but no record of a belt change. The rest of the cars history was spot on but i couldnt take the risk... So got a belt kit from my usual factors on my trade account and got it fitted by a mate of mine who runs his own workshop.

Lo and behold, the belt and tensioners looked almost brand new, Typical aint it?

Still, for peace of mind i know its been done and now documented in the history! He charged me £60 cash for the fitting, and it took him an hour and a half with the water pump change as well. (one small consolation, the pump looked like the original one, so that was due to be changed)

£800 !!!

If you say the jobs going to take a couple of hours at £90 per hour, plus the bits (OE) being £170 ish, its no more than £350 plus vat.

Was the £800 quote including a whole load of other work as well, ie major service?

Or was the dealer like Dick Turpin (without the mask obviously)?
