Use steel rim bolts with alloy rims...?

Post by bushtor »

Hi,

I just purchased a set of nice Pug genuine alloy rims for my Pug 406 2004.

I notice that my steel wheel bolts have coned bolt faces but apparently the alloy rims require bolts with almost flat face.

Does it exist washers with inner cone so I can use my coned wheel bolts with the alloy rims...?

If not, is the only solution to purchase a set of new wheel bolts for the alloy rims...?

Thanks a lot for comments on this

regards

Unfortunately the bolts are different lengths; you should buy new bolts. Compared to the cost of the wheels themselves, they shouldn't cost you too much for a set.

I did the same thing as you (bought 2nd-hand Peugeot alloys to replace my existing steel rims) and didn't receive alloy bolts to go along with them. The garage I frequent (Overtons' Dismantlers just behind the Kirkhill Industrial Estate in Dyce, near Aberdeen) had them in stock and they were cheap as chips.

Most Peugeot alloy wheel bolts will fit, i.e. 205, 306, 309, 405, 406, etc etc. You just need to ensure that the bolts have flat faced washers and are 12x1.25mm thread.

HI,

I dont know if you bought 4 or 5 wheels.

Keep the old bolts as a precaution!

But a word of warning on steel spares......

D8 steel rims are different to d9 rims but look almost identical so that the alloy wheel bolts fit the steel rim supplied with a D9. We only found this out when sorting out an emergency puncture recently. ( I always keep a 'spare' ...spare wheel at home to save emegencies and keep legal as far as the Taxi reg's are concerned) . Apparently the shank on the bolt differs.
One stripped out hub threads later........putting a D8 wheel on a D9.
So if you have a D9, then D8 wheels MUST have their old bolts to fit.
The inside section of a D8 wheel is flat between the 4 holes whereas D9's have raised portions between the holes and a yellow label fitted.

I've know a guy who used steel wheel bolts on alloys, the wheel decided to come off on a corner and totally wrecked the wing

Not worth risking it, get the proper bolts
