FITTING NEW BACKPLATES

MOT is due again at the end of june. Just started doing a few jobs on the 406. Has anyone replaced the rear backplates on their 406 Hdi(110) and how difficult is it?

Can't see any mention of dismantling/fitting one in the haynes manual. One of my backplates was very rusty found a couple of holes with the screwdriver and i managed to clean it up with the wire wheel and used fibreglass to fill the holes then used some smooth hammerite and you wouldn't know i'd repaired it.

Anyway if anyone has an idea about this i'd be grateful.

I guess he means the plate behind the brake disc on the rear, they do like to rust!

Unless they're causing you severe annoyance I'd leave them be.

Each backplate is £90 from the dealers (no pattern parts, and no point putting a 2nd hand pair on because you'll be back to square one in a year) and you've pretty much got to pull off the brake discs, handbrake shoes, callipers and wheel hubs (which will need replacing after) before you can remove them... Not an easy, cheap or quick job

I gather it's not definite you'll need new hub bearings, someone was saying a while back they could just come off (not sure), cheaper alternatives do come up on ebaygum but I'm not sure how good they are (btw the later abs rotor has more teeth so make sure you get the right ones). There's no getting round the gold plated stealer price for the backplates tho, my D8's look like lace doilies but I have beter things to spend my money on (like exploding power steering lines ) Hopefully the next owner will be worrying about that one (that is, if someone actually answers any of the bluddy adds I've stuffed everywhere )

Haynes does cover them, I think you need to look in Suspension and Steering. Anyway, what you've done is probably good enough, just keep an eye on them.
