2lt HPi Timing Belt

Can anyone tell me what milage should the timing belt be changed ?

The car has done 71k

Are they easy done, or a royal PITA ?

Also, what's the best oil & plugs for this engine ?

The timing belt interval is listed as 80,000 miles under normal conditions.

The belt change looks a little tricky for a DIY person, the tensioning being the most awkward (according to Autodata).

I would read up on the best way to change the belt if I were you, it's not impossible, but make sure that you know the correct procedures before you attempt the job.

Some of the instructions in Autodata sound daunting, but sometimes they are fairly straightforward.

A good quality, mid-priced oil. would be a 5w30 fully synthetic, but a good quality, 5w30 or 10w40 oil would be fine.

I use 5w30 fully synthetic in my 2.0HDi.

I only use NGK or Denso plugs.

Yeah 80000 or 8 years. Mine'll be going to garage for that job methinks :oops:

I use the recommended total quartz 7000 10w40 semi synthetic, cheapest place I've found to buy it is the the main stealer believe it or not, about £14 for 5l?

Plugs are a bit naughty, they're really thin ones with a bi-hex head that needs a "special" tool. Most people tell me the plugs are a dealer only part, OEM ones are Bosch. Dealer charges about £48 or so for a set so if you find a cheaper compatible alernative please let me know. A friend who owns a garage once got me a set of NGK ones years ago, he had to dig around and get them matched because there were none listed for our engine and they only cost about £15... never liked them though, suffered the occasional misfire and just didn't seem to run very smooth. I have since discovered that these engines are particularly sensitive to plug gaps, (and the gaps open themselves up over time too!) so the plugs might have been OK but just gapped wrong. Book says gap of 1mm but I've found that 0.9mm works best.

Cool, it's got a wee while to go then.

I am a time served mechanic, but it'll go into a garage to get done, even though i can do my mondeo td belts quick enough, there's no come back if i make a balls
up :lol:

I have a contact in the part dept in our local stealers, so i should get a discount on the parts.

Thanks for the help chaps, i'm sure it'll be the first of many :wink:

If you can do a Mondeo, you can do one of these.

If you have ever done the Vauxhall 16v Ecotec belts, then this one is very similar, including the tensioner arrangement (the one with an arrow and a slot), you line up the arrow in the slot, to adjust it properly.

Nah, i'll leave it to someone who has the cash to replace the engine if they don't do it properly :lol:

My local dealer showed my a new plug and said they were factory set, the gap looked to be nearer 3mm than 1mm. There is no special tool listed in the Peugeot parts list, any ideas on plug spanners.
